A right-wing political and media ecosystem pushing a US-style anti-abortion agenda is gaining traction in the UK

Their campaigns in the UK are based on strategies honed and perfected in the US.

They use language shaped over decades to seed anti-abortion #falsehoods that begin on social media before becoming talking points on conservative-friendly TV stations modelled on right-wing US news channels and far-right podcasts. Crucially, those behind the campaigns also invest millions of dollars to push their agenda in the UK.

Gee, look what I was doing (as a student) a mere 45 years ago.

It's true: "You can find anything online"

We looked at Rupert Murdoch's Post (Full page screaming headlines) vs. the NY Times' treatment (bold headline with facts),
and how the 'fake news' &/or emotive slant impacted viewers' perceptions (or not). This was - #ContextAndPerspective - in New York City in an era when people read newspapers, and they were on every corner in #newstands, just a notch forward in timeline from the days of "Extra! Extra! Read all about i!". Papers at newsstands and grocery check-out cash registers, were ubiquitous, and impactful.

And, in our opinion - myself and future social psychologist Pete Dan - there was a clear, empirically demonstrable difference between tabloid headlines (in this case the Post's screaming headline "Nuke Cloud Spreading" vs the NY Times headline about a hairline fracture at the 3-Mile-Island Nuclear plant, near NYC.

O-Bla-Di, O-bla da. Happy Weekend!

France is asking the #EU to impose new sanctions to target Russian disinformation and election interference around the world, Bloomberg reported on April 24, citing a draft proposal from #France.

The proposal "would target those responsible for threatening the stability, security or #sovereignty of EU member states or third countries by undermining elections, the rule of law, facilitating acts of #violence or do so through the use of information manipulation and interference," Bloomberg wrote.

The governments of #Belgium and #Czechia also warned earlier in April that Russia was operating a disinformation and interference network targeting the upcoming EU parliamentary election.

Microsoft says Russian #disinformation campaign targeting US #elections has begun

U.S. officials have said that #Russia engaged in a widespread campaign of digital disinformation and hacking in the past two presidential elections, with particular effort dedicated to the 2016 election.

The governments of Belgium and Czechia also warned earlier in April that Russia was operating a disinformation and interference network targeting the upcoming EU parliamentary election.

According to the Microsoft report, Russia's campaign to sow disinformation in the U.S. has begun in earnest over the past month and a half but has yet to reach the height of previous efforts.

One of the more common methods is for Russia to spread fake "whistleblower" narratives, which are then picked up by U.S. media outlets.

"Ultimately, after the narrative has circulated online for a series of days or weeks, U.S. audiences repeat and repost this disinformation, likely unaware of its original source," Microsoft said.

The focus of the new campaign is to spread "divisive content," including criticism of U.S. support for Ukraine, the Microsoft report said.

Denmark to donate all its artillery to Ukraine

#Denmark has decided to deliver all the #artillery rounds from its stockpiles to Ukraine, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen told the Ukrainian Lunch at the Munich Security Conference on Feb. 17.

“If you ask Ukrainians, they are asking us for ammunition now, artillery now. From the Danish side, we decided to donate our entire artillery,” Frederiksen said.

“There is still ammunition in European stocks. This is not a question of only production because we have the weapons, we have ammunition, we have air defense that we don’t have to use ourselves at the moment that we should deliver to Ukraine.”

“Russia does not want peace with us. They are destabilizing the Western world from many different angles -- in the Arctic region, the Balkans, and Africa - with #disinformation, #cyberattacks, hybrid war, and obviously in Ukraine,” she said.

Second, to succeed in such markets, content producers must achieve a good reputation (in the eyes of their target audience). One of many things that makes this really hard is that it is strongly in the interests of your competitors to destroy your reputation. In addition to legal accountability for lies and fabrications, this is one thing that keeps lots of media honest, at least when it comes to reporting on narrow matters of fact.

After Russia said Ukrainian prisoners of war were killed in the recent Il-76 plane crash, Ukraine appealed to return the allegedly killed POWs home, Andrii Yusov, a representative of the military intelligence, said on Feb. 1.

But the Russian government has not responded to Ukraine's request, he added.

"Ukraine applied and continues to apply for the transfer of the bodies," Yusov said.

"So far, the Russian side does not agree to this. Therefore, the demand of our state to conduct an impartial international investigation remains relevant...Russia still has not confirmed the process regarding the international open investigation."

Russia is taking advantage of European far-right nationalist movements' increasingly vocal claims to Ukrainian #territory, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reported in its daily assessment on Jan. 29.
