The Tragic Reality of Rachel Corrie’s Death

Twenty years ago on March 16, the world got a tragic glimpse into what the state of Israel was going to become. Given the green light in the Oval Office by President George W. Bush, then-Prime Minister Ariel Sharon – “a man of peace," Bush said at the time – started the now-inevitable march to apartheid and the murderous treatment of the Palestinians against whom the main battle would be waged.

That glimpse was the senseless murder of a passionate, 23-year-old woman whose laudable purpose at the time was simply the protection of Palestinian homes being bulldozed by the Israeli Defense Force (IDF). On that day, Rachel Corrie, a member of the International Solidarity Movement, was brutally murdered by an IDF armored bulldozer as she tried to interject herself between it and its merciless destruction of yet another Palestinian home in the southern Gaza Strip.

Boycott! The Art of Economic Activism

May 13th-30th #2015

Available for viewing during all open hours at Obsidian.

This exhibit features 61 posters from more than twenty boycotts throughout history including the Montgomery Bus Boycott, United Farm Workers’ grape and lettuce boycott, divestment from South Africa to protest Apartheid, boycotts of corporations using sweatshops, the Palestinian call for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions, and many others.

Boycott and divestment campaigns target companies and governments that support and sustain injustices—and posters have been a primary tool for educating about the issues and inspiring people to action. This exhibition uses powerful posters to demonstrate the effectiveness of boycotts as a nonviolent tactic to end injustice and oppression.

This exhibit was created by the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) and the Center for the Study of Political Graphics (CSPG). The exhibits visit to Olympia is sponsored by the Rachel Corrie Foundation.

Rachel Corrie

April 10, 1979 – March 16, 2003

I’m here for other children.

I’m here because I care.

I’m here because children everywhere are suffering and

because forty thousand people die each day from hunger.

I’m here because those people are mostly children.

We have got to understand that the poor are all around

us and we are ignoring them.

We have got to understand that these deaths are preventable.

We have got to understand that people in third world

countries think and care and smile and cry just like us.

We have got to understand that they dream our dreams

and we dream theirs.

We have got to understand that they are us. We are them.

My dream is to stop hunger by the year 2000.

My dream is to give the poor a chance.

My dream is to save the 40,000 people who die each day.

My dream can and will come true if we all look into the future

and see the light that shines there.

If we ignore hunger, that light will go out.

If we all help and work together, it will grow and burn free

with the potential of tomorrow.”
