Personally I am :
- Extraordinarily content with a full 8 hours, which almost never happens
- Fine and dandy with 7
- Fully functional with 6
- Grumpy with 5
- Zombie-like with 4
- Barely able to keep myself upright with 3.
But, as the article says... you do you.
By using objective measures such as actigraphy, which monitors activity and rest cycles, he and other researchers have found that people from hunter-gather societies typically get between 5.7 and 7.1 hours of sleep per night – on the lower end of the scale compared to industrial societies. Their sleep is also more fragmented.
But it also doesn't bother them, says Samson. Of two groups he looked at, in Namibia and Bolivia, less than 3% of foragers said they had trouble falling, or staying, asleep – a fraction of the up to 30% reported in industrial societies. Neither group had a word for "insomnia" in their languages.
"We have this narrative in the West [that] humans have never been more sleep-deprived," he adds. It's total rubbish, he says.
"Sleep need should be regarded as dynamic, with the potential to adapt in response to environmental circumstances," the researchers write. "This means that there is not an optimal amount of sleep for an individual across situations and times. Rather, sleep is a negotiable quantity that is affected by environmental, cultural, psychological and physiological factors, which must be balanced against competing needs and opportunities for various behaviours."
Kicking a sleeping pill habit is possible for seniors with a simple intervention, study shows https://medicalxpress.com/news/2024-09-pill-habit-seniors-simple-intervention.html
Our study shows that participants safely stopped sleeping pills even though many had been taking them for years and that getting a better night's sleep is something that many people can learn to do on their own," said Dr. Andrea Murphy, also a study co-lead.

Quick update for a low spoons day
Today has been rough already, and it’s early afternoon. I didn’t sleep well.

The participants’ sleep patterns also were disturbed, with a decrease in rapid eye movement (REM) and slow-wave sleep and increased wakefulness. This is likely due to an increase in sympathetic nervous system activity, triggering adrenal activity and a rise in norepinephrine, similar to a fight-or-flight-response.“If a person is having symptoms of difficulty sleeping associated with decreased REM and increased wakefulness, this could be a clue indicating salt depletion in their diet,” Leong says.
Conversely, another study found that consuming a high-sodium meal at dinnertime also contributes to sleep disturbances. Participants experienced delays in getting to sleep, multiple awakenings during the night and an average of two to three hours of disturbed sleep.
Adequate (enough) amount of salt give good REM sleep, but too much salt seem to lower the amount of Slow-Wave sleep, its a balancing act. A blood test is not good at indicating your level of salt (sodium) in the body, a hair mineral test is more accurate and give a long term picture of the mineral status. Sodium deficiency could be the cause for your insomnia and poor sleep. So yeah, even if you get 5g of salt each day (2g of sodium, the recommended amount), that might not be enough. Double that amount and see how your sleep improve, find your sweet spot. A sign of too much salt intake is the development of headache.

Earbuds for more restful sleep: Anker’s Soundcore Sleep A20 now officially available
With their air-filled Air-Win design with Twin-Seal ear tips, the new generation is said to offer up to 1.8 times better noise reduction than its predecessor, the Sleep A10, according to the manufacturer. Among other things, they are equipped with a 4-layer noise masking system and are designed to better suppress bothersome ambient noise such as snoring, city noise and the like. Anker promises that the special design means there is no annoying pressure on the ear and auricle and that they are also suitable for side sleepers.
The earbuds also enable automatic sleep monitoring, including sleep position tracking, via the Soundcore app.
Wearing earbuds for sleeping is very different from during the day. I’d be interested to hear what others think about the “pressure on the ear” when sleeping with these earbuds. That is one of the biggest issues for most when sleeping. I’ve been very happy with my own Soundcores for afternoon naps – great noise-cancelling, but you can’t sleep on your side with them.
