The data continue to support the benefits of vaccination. Getting vaccinated, along with other simple mitigation strategies, is the best way to protect yourself and those you love from COVID-19.
However, many people forget that COVID-19, aside from illness itself, can also put you at greater risk for other complications and medical issues.
A recent study in New England Journal of Medicine was able to quantify the absolute risk of a variety of adverse events in people who had COVID-19 as well as people who were vaccinated against COVID-19. The contrast is quite stark. These data assessed 2.4 million vaccinated persons to evaluate the safety profile of the BNT162b2 mRNA Covid-19 vaccine and more than 240,000 people with SARS-CoV-2 infections.
Even when comparing adverse events that have occurred after vaccination, such as myocarditis and pericarditis, the absolute risk of those conditions is still far greater after COVID-19 than after vaccination. The main event that was more prevalent amongst vaccinated persons was lymphadenopathy, which is swelling of the lymph nodes. This is a mild condition that occurred in the clinical trials as well, and is an indication that the immune system is responding to something β in this case, the vaccination, to develop protection against future illness.
Aside from these adverse events presented here, we know the risk of death is astronomically greater β there have been over 4.5 MILLION deaths due to COVID-19 so far globally. This is obviously not the case with vaccination. Getting infected with SARS-CoV-2 also puts your family, friends, and community members at risk β something the vaccine does the exact opposite of.
The choice has always been clear, but these data strengthen the case: please get vaccinated.

US: Vaccination skeptics voice regret after falling ill
The delta variant of the coronavirus has helped fuel a surge in hospital admissions in the United States β especially in the South, where vaccination rates are low.
Now, some former avowed skeptics regret the fact that they didn't get their shots.

Darwin Award committee overwhelmed with the enormous level of entries received for this year's awards. Spokesperson says that already this year they've received the most entries since the Darwin Awards began. They expect to hire new, temporary staff as pandemic continues in order to ensure all entries are process in time for this year's awards.

Vaccines are the strongest bulwark against the Covid-19 pandemic. Theyβre highly effective at preventing deaths and hospitalizations, free in the US, and all residents over the age of 12 are eligible. But even with the highly transmissible delta variant gaining ground and new Covid-19 cases on the rise, vaccinations have reached a stubborn plateau. About 67 percent of eligible US residents have received at least one dose, and the rate of new vaccinations has fallen drastically since the spring. From a peak of 3.4 million shots per day in April, the number of daily new injections is down to around 600,000.
