Recent studies suggest staying up-to-date on COVID shots helps protect high-risk groups from severe illness
New guidelines suggest certain high-risk groups could benefit from having another dose of a COVID-19 vaccine this spring — and more frequent shots in general — while the broader population could be entering once-a-year territory, much like an annual flu shot.
Medical experts told CBC News that falling behind on the latest shots can come with health risks, particularly for individuals who are older or immunocompromised.
"Even when the risk of infection starts to increase, the vaccines still do a really good job at decreasing risk of severe disease," said McMaster University researcher and immunologist Matthew Miller.

A beloved coach and teacher who unexpectedly died is being remembered by a North Carolina community for his commitment to students and athletes. Michael Neff, 32, was a physical education teacher at Hardin Park School and district coach when he died, according to Feb. 1 statement from Watauga County Schools. Emergency officials did not have any public information regarding Neff’s death as of Feb. 2. Neff, who lived in Zionville, was born in Hollywood, Florida, before he moved to North Carolina, according to his obituary. He went to Watauga High School and graduated from Appalachian State University with a physical education degree, according to his Facebook.
One of the most memorable things about Neff was how devoted he was to his job as a coach and teacher, the Watauga High School Pioneer Booster Club said on Facebook. “He had a gift of connecting with his students, players, and teams that made each one feel seen. Important. Valued. Successful,” the booster club wrote in its post.
“He accomplished much, served tirelessly, and coached just about any team he was asked to, but it’s his sincere love for others that will be missed most,” the club said. Much of the success with Watauga High School’s football team could be attributed to Neff’s recruiting, player development and athlete retention, Watauga High School football coach Ryan Habich said in a statement through the Watauga Touchdown Club, a nonprofit that supports the school’s football program.
“As a leader, Coach Neff knew the students inside and out,” Habich said. “He knew where each came from, what their goals were, what their strengths and weaknesses were, and what buttons to positively push to help them achieve more than expected.” Neff’s death marked a “sad day” for the Boone community, said Hunter’s Heroes, a nonprofit started after a local deputy died. The nonprofit was created by Neff’s wife Emily, although Neff was a “big part of it,” the organization said on Facebook. “He truly loved all his athletes and kids at Hardin Park Elementary,” the nonprofit said. Now, Hunter’s Heroes said it is going to start a scholarship fund in Neff’s honor for middle school or high school athletes.
The Boone Police Department also expressed its condolences for Neff’s family, saying his “impact goes far beyond the walls of Hardin Park School.”
Neff’s funeral services are scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 4, at Alliance Bible Fellowship, according to his obituary. Boone is about 85 miles northeast of Asheville.

I'm Okay
It's rare, but I got sick both times I've had the #vaccine for #Covid19. The first time wasn't bad, but the second one last week got pretty bad for a while. I'm being treated and my #heart rhythm is back to mostly normal. I won't get any more #boosters though, since I have bad reactions to them. At this point the benefits do not outweigh the risks from the #virus.
