Threads has entered the fediverse - Engineering at Meta

https://engineering.fb.com/2024/03/21/networking-traffic/threads-has-entered-the-fediverse/

I must admit I never thought this would actually happen, #Threads federating with the Fediverse, but it did, woah. Pretty huge moment for #ActivityPub. Now lets hope #Meta plays it nice with interop, well as nice as any of the other bickering and sometimes somewhat poorly interopping #Fediverse platforms are doing :P

While I totally expect half of the Fedi to go on an instance blocking spree, personally I'm happy for this development. And hey, even if half of the Fedi does go on an instance blocking spree, that is fine. It's all a part of the freedom provided by a decentralized federated network.

It's a huge pity #Bluesky settled on building their own platform. We could be a very big nice happy family had they chosen to adopt ActivityPub during the evaluations they did.

I just hope resharing Zuck's first Fedi post wont demolish my poor #Socialhome instance 😅

Sollte das #Fediverse mit großen Tech-Firmen föderieren oder deföderieren?

Bluesky vs. Mastodon: Which Twitter Alternative Should You Choose?

Bluesky logo "vs" Mastodon logo
Bluesky and Mastodon are two social media networks with an aim to provide a decentralized platform for users. As microblogging platforms, they also wanted to pitch themselves as a Twitter alternative (primarily) when they started.

Mastodon is one of the most-loved open-source social media platforms. But, what’s different with Bluesky?

Although they do similar things, and both can federate, there are some differences too. It’s important to also remember that the Mastodon social network is one of many social networks that all use the ActivityPub protocol, and those networks collectively are referred to as the Fediverse. Mastodon may be the biggest social network in the Fediverse, but the others offer other options such as long text format posts, nomadic identities, photo albums, etc.

Can’t decide between Bluesky, Mastodon and Nostr? Nootti’s new app lets you post to all three

Apple App Store screen for Nootti stating Write Once Customise Post, Follow Your Audience, Words Count Use Them All, and Media Included.
Managing a social presence these days can be tough. It’s even tougher for those who are experimenting with the new wave of Twitter-like services, like Mastodon, Nostr and Bluesky, where staying active means a lot of duplicate posts to different networks. Thankfully, developers are starting to address our needs for cross-posting tools. In addition to scheduling services like Fedica and Postpone, there’s now a new app, Nootti, that allows you to post to Mastodon, Nostr and Bluesky from one interface.

What makes Nootti compelling is that you can easily customize each post slightly for the different platforms. To do so, you first type your post in the “Main” tab, then switch over to the tabs for the other social networks. The post will be automatically filled in on each tab, but you can edit the message for the individual networks.

Which is all great, but it is only an iOS app, and there is no mention of a coming Android version at all. The Tapestry app should be coming still (no posting, and also iOS only), but I’m thinking we will see more of these integrated social network platform apps.

The fediverse, explained

The Verge

The buzziest new thing in social networking is a big deal. It’s also very confusing. And it’s not actually new. (...)

Illustration: fediverse as interconnected sociale media
.

So what is the fediverse?
It’s an interconnected social platform ecosystem based on an open protocol called ActivityPub, which allows you to port your content, data, and follower graph between networks.

What?

Ugh, I know. Let me try again.

The fediverse is as if you took X, TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram, and Facebook and made them all interoperable so you could post anything from anywhere, and all your followers would be guaranteed to see it. And if you wanted to leave one platform for another, you could bring all your content, all your followers, all your everything with you. (...)

But all of this stuff only works if there is a standard, and I’d bet $10 that ActivityPub is going to be that standard. It’s the one that’s overseen by the World Wide Web Consortium, it’s the one with the most momentum, it’s the one Threads is supposedly going to support — it’s just kind of clearly winning. (...)

So why would I leave Instagram and Facebook?
That’s the big question. Do you like Instagram and Facebook?

I mean, sure. It’s where all my friends are.
That is the single biggest problem for the fediverse. A lot of folks I’ve talked to say that, basically, if we’d built social media like this 20 years ago, the world would be better and smarter and we’d all be richer and better-looking. (Or something.) But we didn’t. We built it on a bunch of closed platforms that turned out to be really sticky, really lucrative for the companies that made them, and frankly kind of user-hostile. But it’s really, really hard to convince people to stop hanging out where their friends are and go join something new just because it’s better. That transition will take a long time, if it ever happens. (...)

It seems clear to me that the tech press, even those friendly to decentralization, are only interested in Threads, Bluesky, and whatever new idea some other VC fund or billionaire come up with. Mastodon and AP are mentioned in passing if at all. That's unfortunate. It's not just a chasing the money thing because it's the likes of people who have proven not to succumb to that, I'm not naming names. We on the D* and AP side of the fediverse, or social web as I have heard people call it recently, can still go about our business improving things incrementally and doing what we've always done. If another wave comes and we catch it fine. The tech press and pundits, even fediverse friendly ones, have sadly moved on. Ironically most of the articles I see on why they like Bluesky more than Mastodon, the rest of the fediverse doesn't get recognized at all ever and never has by these same people again except maybe in passing, are reasons why I haven't liked my Bluesky experience (which I've thankfully integrated into the Friendica part of the fediverse I reside in thanks to its bridge). But anyway...back to incremental improvement and growth and doing our own thing with the "normies" not considering us a valid option for the time being again. #rant #fediverse #bluesky #mastodon #friendica
