I was reading an article about earning enough to be economically comfortable. The definition of comfortable was 50/30/20 where 50% is housing and utilities, 30% is discretionary and 20% is saving. That does sound plausible and nearly impossible to meet

Do you consider internet access to be a utility or discretionary spending? I do consider internet access to be a utility and were I on a budget, I would include data with a smartphone plan and ditch the stand-alone internet.

Hello fellow humans, Cass here.

I was reading this article which states many young people keep their phone on do not disturb all the time because phone calls make them anxious. Interesting as calls from random people make me annoyed – a different ‘a’ word. Growing up in the landline era, I don’t think this is an unreasonable use of the DnD feature but prefer a silent ring so I can screen calls.

Do you always answer your phone? Do you consider this a genius solution to control interruptions? Also, is anxious just a nicer way of saying annoyed?

We finally got our microgeneration agreement for our solar panels. We bumped up our array from 4.8 kW to 7.2 kW because of our EV charger. While I understood we would get more energy production, it wasn’t intuitive just how much difference it would make, especially in December and January. We went from around 100kW to generating 200 to 300 kW in a month. This means we could net zero our daylight hours on a sunny day! Cool when your power is NG sourced.

Me, I'm absolutely flabbergasted that a computer chip on Voyager 1 was broken, and that NASA's solution was to repackage and move key software, with code sent via radio signal that took 22+ hrs to reach that little 46yr old machine. And. It's. WORKING!!

Why howdy there #Checkin people, it’s me, Roddio again. Today, we’re going to talk about computers.

Now I'm not computer expert, I'm just an old school graphic artist that someone stuck the "Designer" title to. In '90 I got a job where the art department had Macs that the artists worked on, and an IBM to run the production software. I was hire specifically to help them switch from an old chemical-based darkroom to a completely digital workshop.

Fast forward two decades and every art job I had was backed up by being the in-house Macintosh guy, because the brainiacs in the IT departments couldn't make heads or tails of them, so I did all the installs, maintenance, updates and even repairs.

The upshot was that for years I also became an artist's consultant for Macs, as most visually creative types seemed incapable of learning anything about their computers. It was a pretty cool side gig, and I got to meet and work with some very cool people.

After trying to instruct them over the telephone, I spent most of yesterday helping a retired schoolteacher download all their files from a '12 iMac onto a hard drive so that they can donate it, as they had discovered the wonders of the new 14" M3 MacBook Air.

It amazes me how many people know so little about simple computer tasks. It's not as if there aren't countless instructions online for them to follow. Anyway, instead of charging them, I asked for their old computer, which I will upgrade with an SSD drive, increase the RAM, and install the latest OS with a patcher before giving it to someone I know could use it,.

Cats are doing better, save one that's still freaked out.

I’m totally ready for things to begin warming up, but it looks like this week will stay cool around these parts. I was hoping for better outdoor weather, but then, I’m not sweating much on my bike during the day, and as long as I stay in until midday, the ride won’t be too chilly.
This year has been unseasonably cool. The weather has been all over the place. I see that we're looking at a transition from El Niño to ENSO-neutral is likely by April-June 2024 (85% chance), with the odds of La Niña developing by June-August 2024 (60% chance) (11 Apr 2024) Now La Niña is not known to influence California's summer weather, but by late fall and winter, a slight tilt in the odds toward drier than normal conditions is likely in the southern half of the state. That means Fire Season.

Why howdy there #Checkin people, it’s me, Roddio again. Today, we’re going to talk about pets, hoarding, and loss.

As many of you know, Val and I are way over the border into Crazy Cat Lady Territory. As weird as this may be, having too many cats seems more sensible than optimistic hoarding.

I am amazed at those who keep odd things that may possibly have some use in the future. I guess that comes from watching my neighbor’s family empty his house out after he died. I could hardly believe some of the things he had stashed away in his house, and even more in his garage and shed.

But then again, sometimes I wish I had kept some of the things I had no more use for. Like maybe kept one hand painted motorcycle peanut tank. Or those Japanese woodblock prints I sold because there was no room to display them in this small house.
It would have been nice to take them out and look at them from time to time.

Why howdy there #Checkin people, it’s me, Roddio again. Today, we’re going to talk about friends, relocating, and the weather.

My friends Taber and Dorota are here from Portugal, where they just relocated from Poland. They found 40 acres outside a village where their closest neighbor is 1/4 mile/ .40km away. They like it, but no thanks. I may change my mind when I visit them next Spring.
I'd be more inclined to find an urban setting with a great walk score and bicycle infrastructure, like Grenoble France. But, it's cold there in the winter, and right now it's raining @ 42°F/6°C, and will get down to 33°F/1°C sometime tonight. (Brrr!)

The weather here in San Diego is why so many people come to visit and then want to move here (until they check the real estate averages and cost of living.) The high was 71°F/21°C with an overnight low of 51°F/11°C. I'll stay here if I can, but if I could sell up here and move there, the cost of a house runs about half of what I could get for this old cottage.

Hiya! Today is Songkran Day in Thailand! Songkran is one of my favourite festivals. It was Thailand's traditional New Year, before New Year there was changed to January 1. More importantly Songkran is celebrated as a sort of physical and spiritual Spring Cleaning Day. Songkran is well known for its water throwing celebrations. Water fights and ambushes take place throughout the country. Aside: coloured chalk is used too! People use containers of water, water guns or hoses to soak everyone else in sight. It's a good thing that April is the hottest month of the year, hence being soaked is refreshing. Being in a vehicle doesn't spare you either, unless your car doors are locked, since pails of water are flung into cars with unlocked doors. Hence, if you're in Thailand today, be prepared to be soaked and colourful. Imagine indulging in a day long water fight! 🤭😂😂😂

Hiya Gang! Last week I learned something I wished I learned when young! While I've known forever that we humans are designed to have a fight/flight response when our survival is threatened, I was clueless to the physiological process that occurs to enable this to happen, and any associated related repercussions. (The following is a lay person's description.) It's life changing to know now what happens when we are under stress and the stress hormone cortisol as well as adrenaline are released into our blood stream. The more stress we experience, the more cortisol and adrenaline are released. One of the outcomes of this is that more blood is redirected to our muscles and the part of our brain which enables enhanced capabilities to fight/flee. The blood is redirected FROM other parts of the body such as the part of our brain that provides rational thinking - the part required for sound decision-making... Hence, when our brains are flooded with cortisol and adrenaline, our rational, decision-making ability becomes increasingly limited. That's right, while we are more able to respond to threat, we become less able to listen objectively AND to make thoughtful, calm judgments! Ever notice when in the heat of an argument, the other party cannot seem to hear what you're saying? So, how many of us, at the height of being equipped to fight/flee realize what's happening and calmly (depending on the situation of course) successfully arrange a time-out to continue very intense exchanges to a later time to allow for the cortison+ level to ebb and our full rational minds to be restored? 😶🤣 (Cortisol imbalances also cause many other outcomes but I'm focussed on this one for now.)

I find myself awake far from home and mine - start coffee makings, feed Zach, check out what's happening in the garden - is not possible, hence, I'm thinking of you. Hiya! Great to see you here at the #Checkin forum, a place to connect with a diverse, very interesting and kind-hearted bunch of people from all over. If you're #newhere, this daily post is much like a virtual fave coffee shop or water cooler. The weekly mod, me (@su ann lim) this week, introduces a topic, like a special of the day menu item to respond to or not. You're always free to comment on anything else that happens to be on your mind. Confession - I enjoy checkin posts where multiple conversations are going on at the same time! 😂😂😂

Today's topic - what's something you did recently that you hadn't done in a long time?

Pour moi, together with a few friends it's a night of music and dance at our local legion!!! Back story - what seems like eons ago, if one wanted live music entertainment in this region, one had to go to night spots in downtown Vancouver. Fast forward to the present - the majority of "night spots' have disappeared and those that exist require a long commute to get to, charge insane prices, and are not friendly places. Fast forward to today - recently, we started noticing local legions (essentially humble meeting halls) promoting live tribute band music. For a lark, a few pals and I decided to check the closest one out. What's not to like about a reasonable ticket price, a very short uber ride, reasonable refreshments and eats and familar sounding live music. Examples of recent tribute performances - Van Morrison, Doors, Tragically Hip, etc. Surprise, surprise what a blast! Well, there were young ones discovering a retro experience but the majority of participants, despite possible age-related challenges, rediscovered the dance floor. What was unique - it was a relaxed community experience. Most stayed till closing! 🤣🤣🤣 Your turn!

Hello, hello! It's @su ann lim as #checkin mod this week. How's everyone? It's lovely to be back since I've been crazy busy lately.

Yesterday, I found myself once again on one of BC Ferries' vessels which ply the waters from the British Columbia mainland coast to many offshore places along our coast. The busiest and largest ferries of course connect the Metro Vancouver area to the southern tip of Vancouver Island, where Victoria, the capital city is located. Despite the countless times I've made this journey, I enjoy time on one of these cruiseship size vessels. One just drives or walk on, find a comfy seat to enjoy the wonderful views, have food or beverages, shop, watch large screens, or have a walk outside on large decks... A great bonus is to spot wildlife during the journey - the most spectacular I've encountered was a time when MANY Orca pods of whales accompanied the vessel I was on and put on a spectacular show of multiple breachings. That was a rare experience, it's more common to see one pod of whales or dolphins.

And it's also National Cherish an Antique Day. My parents still have an old, no longer functioning typewriter as a decoration that I loved to play with as a kid and always found fascinating. They also have/had some old furniture. Probably not really that antique, but at least a bit looking it.

Do you have any old antique or antique looking objects? Maybe a lamp, typewriter, and old clock, or furniture, or perhaps the good old Ming Vase?

I don't think they need to raise awareness for it, you will smell it... and it's Zoo Lover's Day! I think it's been some time since I have been to a Zoo, I think the last time I visited a zoo was a couple of years ago in Finland. It was more a kind of wild park than a zoo with arctic animals... However, I occasionally watch videos from the Bio park guys in Japan and their capybaras and other animals...

When was the last time you visited a zoo, or maybe just a small petting zoo with goats or sheep?

Good afternoon/evening/morning everyone and welcome to today's #checkin. It's still around 22C degrees outside. My parents visited me today, and we went for a walk along the city and river.
So tomorrow, a couple of you are probably lucky enough to see the total eclipse. Just a short reminder for everyone out there, make sure to wear the special glasses and do not look directly in the sun. The good news are, you can eat during the Eclipse as well...;)

For us here in Germany, it will be just another Monday.... However, I remember the last one from a couple of years ago. It's always fascinating.
