My writers' group reviewed the seventh and last of the #stories in my 'story cycle', a set of stories in what I describe as a low-magic #fantasy world (which became increasingly #queer as I went). It's a chunky one, much longer than the previous six. Most of them wanted me to write more, possibly turning this story into a novel. I don't think so. The stories all together are meant to form a novella.

Still, it's good to be appreciated and receive constructive feedback, and I was congratulated on finishing this project, even if there's still a fair amount of editing to do. It feels good. After all, I wrote the first story more than ten years ago, when two friends and I formed a small writing group. I picked the up the writing during lockdown and it's finally getting there.

Not Icarus: A short story inspired by events in Lytton, British Columbia, June 2021. The town set heat records three days in a row, and on the fourth day a wildfire destroyed most of it. The story considers those of use who think of climate change as something far away, in time or place, until it affects us personally. #climatechange #story #writing #amwriting #Icarus

Can I make myself sit down and write an outline for this new short-story idea? I have a vague idea for the story, more specifically how it ends, and much of the world creation is done because it's set in my Chronicles of Madarre world. The main character is someone from The Ambitions of Kreltahk (book 1 in the series). Or... maybe a close relative.

But a) I'm a pantser and rarely stick to my attempts at outlines, and b) I really don't know what I want to do with this story. I'll play "what if, and then what if..." a bit, but my exhausted brain ("stressful" doesn't begin to describe my day job) doesn't want to cooperate with creative efforts these days.

"Do you notice something?" he asked the three, who hadn't given anyone their names yet.

"Yes," the black Aheri said. "The markings are strange."

Paul turned to the cave and studied the rock around the entrance. "Which markings do you mean?"

Hilda frowned as she saw the scroll. "You got a written invitation? But you're his official scribe, aren't you?"

"I am. I wrote this myself. After that he told me to hurry home, so he could send someone over to hand the invitation to me." Johanna sighed. "That failed majestically because the messenger couldn't find my house."

...they rolled the leaf into something that could only be called a misshapen cigar. As this was a world with its own laws, suddenly one end of the 'cigar' burned.

Acaraho invited Sheila to sit down. "If you stand, the effect might be a bit too much."

They all sat down, Sheila slowly inhaling the fumes of the plant.

"Okay, I can smell why they call it pukeweed," she said. "Sniff this too fast and you'll lose yesterday's lunch."

The SkyGhost's deck was littered with parts. Old parts, broken parts, and parts waiting to be fitted. It was a clear sign that repairs were well underway, but it also told the captain that the SkyGhost wasn't going anywhere today or tomorrow.
