Recently I’ve been reading more about the emotional side of #hearing loss.I assumed that because I was born moderately #deaf that I hadn’t experienced loss in the ‘emotional’ sense, because I’d never known any different.

But I now see how hard I have been on myself and how my lack of hearing really dented my confidence as a child, teenager and young person in work.

Whether your deafness is recent or lifelong it’s ok to acknowledge the frustration and isolation

New DEAFinition App helps you communicate with deaf friends and family

A new South African app called DEAFinition, developed by mobile app specialists Codehesion, helps users to learn the basics of sign language to communicate with deaf friends and family.

DEAFinition is a non-profit company providing a range of services and funding opportunities to promote equal access for the deaf community.

The SASL DEAFinition App, available to Android and iPhone users, offers reference videos and material for the official sign language used by deaf people in South Africa.

Shocking treatment of this poor man!

If you're not aware, during the last 140 years since the infamous Milan conference, until recently teaching the Deaf via sign language has been discouraged and even actively abolished by hearing higher-ups. Instead the precious school time has been wasted trying to 'cure' children of Deafness by barbaric methods used in the pursuit of 'teaching them to speak' by 'teachers of the Deaf' who barely know any sign, if any.

The result being that many Deaf children have emerged from an education that has taught them own some cases to form words that they can't hear but has left them criminally short of an education that could have been delivered far less effortlessly had sign been used as a teaching method.

All this to say that it was completely ignorant to assume the the man had much, or any, experience of expressing his concerns, health and medical history using written English.

We can do better. ☹️
