Thanks to Whiskey, You Will Be Gaming on Your Mac More Than Ever

The image shows a dimly lit bar scene, with shelves of liquor bottles blurred in the background. In the foreground, a bottle of whisky, a glass of amber liquid, and a laptop displaying a pixelated video game are arranged on a wooden surface. The laptop's screen showcases a scene seemingly from a retro-style role-playing game, vibrant colours adding a touch of fantasy to the otherwise mature environment. The bar's soft lighting creates a warm, inviting ambiance, contrasting with the focus on the digital world displayed on the screen.
Whiskey is a free app that you can download right now, and use to play Windows games on your Mac. It brings together the WINE compatibility layer as well as Apple’s own Game Porting Kit, while removing all the nerdy setup and hassle involved with both.

So it seems that Whiskey is stronger than WINE!

It seems to be a bit like the Bottles app on Linux. In my own case, Steam on Linux is playing most games that I want to play, but if you want to play games that are not on Steam, then I suppose Whiskey and similar apps would be the way to go.

The Vivaldi login is used for things like sync, but also the forum and blogging service. Sync has an extra encryption password.

What this means is that for anyone using Vivaldi, getting into Mastodon is really, really easy.

#MacOS for #china?
I just tested #deepin Linux. I had some contact with Chinese punk bands in the spring. Again, I noticed how progressive they are, especially in their minds. Here in Germany, where everyone believes they are the winners of history, but in reality everything is just brimming with reactionary arrogance, many people (and especially those who make decisions and should know better) believe that everyone in China lives in hell. Some things were confirmed by the bands, but the vast majority of Western clichés were met with a pitiful shake of the head. Last year, China installed three times as much renewable energy as the rest of the world combined. And that's just one example. We are a long way behind, also in terms of social coexistence. The Chinese know very well that there is still a lot to do and not everyone agrees. But at least the people I was able to ask believe that things are moving in the right direction and they were certainly not conformists.

So today I tested the “official” Chinese #Linux. It would be nothing for me. Super stylish, super user-friendly, with funny pop-ups. It seemed to me like Linux for children, immediately reminded me of #Apple and macOS, only with a Debian base. If you're interested, there's a “Community” edition to try out for yourself https://www.deepin.org/en/

I'll stick with Red Star OS from North Korea ;)))

Scrcpy – Display and Control Your Android Device via Linux Desktop

Scrcpy (pronounced “screen copy“) is a free, #open-source, and cross-platform application used to display and control an #Android device from your #Linux desktop computer. It works on Linux, #Windows, and #macOS, and allows you to control a device connected via a #USB or #wirelessly (over TCP/IP).

It features mirroring with Android device screen off, configurable screen display quality, recording, copy and paste in both directions, using an Android device as a webcam (Linux only), physical keyboard and mouse simulation, #OTG mode, and much more.

To use #scrcpy, your Android device must have at least API 21 (Android 5.0), and it must also have #adb (Android Debug Bridge) debugging (USB debugging) enabled. But, it does not require root user access on Linux.

For The Record

Finally! I'm making progress on digitizing my vinyl. First step was doing various maintenance/repair things to my Technics 1200-Mk2 turntable. Next was rescuing the collection itself from less than desirable storage conditions. Only lost about a dozen to that. Next was experimenting with various digitizing solutions. I finally settled on a Tascam digital recorder, using the late Brian Davies' ClickRepair, and editing with Felt Tip's Sound Studio. Have gotten good results. Even better, I've found a local record shop with a HumminGuru Ultrasonic Record Cleaner, and it works a treat.

There are still more than a few LPs that I have that never made it to CD, so they'll be the first to get the treatment. I imagine I'll spend a little time doing some A/B comparisons between vinyl and CD. I'm no longer as hard core an audiophile as I used to be, at least partly because my golden ears have aged out a bit, and also because I spent enough time behind the curtain of how the product was made to understand the limits of what gear can and can't do.

It's kind of amazing to be reminded how much effort went into record sleeves and liner notes. It just doesn't translate when rendered to jewel box size, especially to older eyes. Ha! LPs have become the new Large Print Books!

I poked around to see if there was software that would make cataloging all this any easier, and am discovering that most of the stuff I looked at even five years ago has gone away. Wil Shipley has gone on to Apple, and Conor Dearden has recently stepped back from his **pedia applications to spend more time with his family. A consequence of the market shifting to streaming is that fewer people have physical collections to manage.

The software business is fickle, I tell you. I got lucky with Brian Davies' ClickRepair, as I had installers and license stashed away. His work was apparently sold to someone who doesn't want to put it on the market again. I imagine it might be a competitor. His software is that good, and was inexpensive compared to iZotope.

Another thing I'm going to take a stab at is using Shazam to try to identify some tunes on old mixtapes I have that didn't have complete listings. I've stumped it a few times, to be sure, but it came up with correct answers on some that I did not expect it to know. Technology can be great, when it works, and before it gets enshittified.

Plash is a free and open-source app that lets you turn any website into your Mac desktop wallpaper

A view of Earth's globe, with a popup window showinga selection of three websites, one which is selected as earth a global map of wind, weather, and ocean (rest is cut off)
Do you ever wish your Mac’s wallpaper was a little more…animated? Plash is a free app that lets you turn any website into your desktop wallpaper—and you’ll even be able to interact with it.

There’s an easy way to use transform any YouTube video into wallpaper on Windows—this is the Mac version of that trick, and you can use any website. There are some practical, boring reasons you might want to do this. For example, maybe you find the desktop widgets in macOS Sonoma underwhelming and would rather turn your desktop into a giant Google Calendar.

I’ve long been using something similar on my Linux KDE desktop to show an updated world map view of all the ham radio JS8Call activity, which updates every few minutes.

First look: #Windows 11 is getting native #macOS or #Linux - like #Sudo command

source: https://www.windowslatest.com/2024/02/01/first-look-windows-11-is-getting-native-macos-or-linux-like-sudo-command/

You might be familiar with “Sudo” if you’ve used Linux-based Distro or Linux on a server or have a macOS. The Sudo command in Linux or macOS allows modifying system files, changing system settings, system-wide updates and more. The same command is now heading to Windows 11.
