Chemists discover new way to harness energy from ammonia | Phys.org

A research team at the University of Wisconsin-Madison has identified a new way to convert ammonia to nitrogen gas through a process that could be a step toward ammonia replacing carbon-based fuels.
The discovery of this technique, which uses a metal catalyst and releases—rather than requires—energy, was reported Nov. 8 in Nature Chemistry and has received a provisional patent from the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation.

Nature under threat: a Cop26 photographic competition – in pictures | Environment | The Guardian

The Earth Project, in collaboration with Nature Picture Library photography competition, aims to raise awareness of the huge challenges faced by nature, as well as the impacts of climate change on global ecosystems. Some of the world’s leading photographers came together to illustrate nature under threat, linking to one of the main goals of Cop26: to help protect and restore ecosystems in countries adversely affected by the climate crisis

Boris Johnson's luxury private plane habit laid bare as he spends £216k on flights | Mirror Online

Boris Johnson has spent at least £216,000 on private flights since becoming Prime Minister, the Sunday Mirror can reveal.
The polluting PM pumped an estimated 52 tons of CO2 into the air with party political campaign trips on private jets and VIP charter planes.
Almost all of the private flights taken by Mr Johnson since becoming PM could have been made with forms of transport which produce far less carbon dioxide - often with little difference in travel time.
And it would have taken a year for a typical petrol-powered car to emit the carbon dioxide released by the private jet flights in just an hour.

Johnson should resign, immediately. Not only are the Tory MPs playing into the hands of the anti-vaxxers, he's now giving a big bonus to the climate disaster "skeptics".

Why the U.N.’s Biodiversity Conference Is So Important - The New York Times

As 20,000 government leaders, journalists, activists and celebrities from around the world prepare to descend on Glasgow for a crucial climate summit starting late this month, another high-level international environmental meeting got started this week. The problem it seeks to tackle: A rapid collapse of species and systems that collectively sustain life on earth.

The stakes at the two meetings are equally high, many leading scientists say, but the biodiversity crisis has received far less attention.

Climate change: Animals shapeshifting to stay cool, study says | BBC News

When you hear the word "shapeshifting" you probably think of a sci-fi or horror film, and not the climate.
But that's what scientists say is happening to some animals in response to climate change.
Warm-blooded species are evolving to have larger beaks, legs and ears to regulate body temperature as the planet warms up, a new study suggests.
