"What is the cheapest way to beat climate change?"

https://youtu.be/ReXaS4QausQ?si=RScS-wBsK8cCuOst

Tackling climate change, viewed from an economic angle. You will often hear people whining about how expensive it is to fight climate change. Those people usually not only ignore the costs that will arise if we don't do anything, they also ignore the economic reality, usually lobbying for certain economic interests.

Funnily, there are even solutions that come with negative costs. Others (like bicycle infrastructure) don't cost much, they only need to be done.

https://climatejustice.social/@breadandcircuses/112093951203096593 breadandcircuses@climatejustice.social - Woo-hoo, this is it!  🎉 Let’s celebrate! 🥳  If you live in the USA, today is Earth Overshoot Day for 2024!!

That means we’ve used our entire carbon budget in this country for the full year. We have exceeded our Ecological Footprint.

So, as of today, no one will be driving ICE cars or flying on airplanes. All our fossil fuel power plants are shutting down until next January. No more single-use plastics for the rest of the year. Everything is getting delivered by bicycle or on foot, and —

  — wait, what? It doesn’t mean that?

It means nothing changes at all? You mean we’ll still be polluting the atmosphere with greenhouse gases and poisoning our bodies with microplastics?

Nothing changes? Nothing??!!

Shit.

I almost forgot this screenshot I took on Monday evening.
enter image description here
I took it after I heard that our lowest night temperature was supposed to be 24C, which I couldn't quite believe. These are the tropics, but even here February is usually cold - at least our "cold", which means 10-15C at night or lower. I switched to Summer now: Shorts, t-shirt and no more jacket on the bike.

I wonder though: If this is February, what will the real Summer be like?

Joe Biden just did the rarest thing in US politics: he stood up to the oil industry

The Biden administration suspended new permits for natural gas terminals. Can we see more of this kind of backbone?

Ten days ago Joe Biden did something remarkable, and almost without precedent – he actually said no to big oil.

His administration halted the granting of new permits for building liquefied natural gas (LNG) export terminals, something Washington had been handing out like M&Ms on Halloween for nearly a decade. It’s a provisional “no” – Department of Energy experts will spend the coming months figuring out a new formula for granting the licenses that takes the latest science and economics into account – but you can tell what a big deal it is because of the howls of rage coming from the petroleum industry and its gaggle of politicians.

And you can tell something else too: just how threadbare their arguments have become over time. Biden has called their bluff, and it’s beautiful to watch.

. . .

Climate Crisis by Maggie Ena

https://songwhip.com/maggieena/climate-crisis

When the well is dry
Where will you turn
And which of your family
Are you gonna watch burn
No history books for you
To be on the wrong side of
What will be the meaning of
Your monetary triumph

While we all, have to pay
It's not far away

The people who deny
Yeah they know that it's a lie
They hope you buy what they are faking
The private jets they fly
All the solutions they won't try
Still here is what they're saying

"Let's keep mining coal" as if
It's saving those towns
I'm not blaming those towns
Why should we save our home?
Because when it goes down
We'll all go down
Yeah we'll all go down
