#december

Hallo Dezember.

The United Nations Marks a Change
Still, the factories and #slaughterhouses remained on the landfill on the banks of the East River well into the 1940s. But that changed suddenly in #December #1946, when a you know who - John D. Rockefeller Jr. purchased six blocks of river frontage and donated it to the newly formed United Nations for its headquarters complex. Completed a few years later, the U.N. complex of buildings became among the most architecturally influential in the world, and its landscaped gardens a stark contrast to the industrial structures that had stood on the land for years. The tallest of the buildings, the 37-story Secretariat building, was the first building in New York to use a façade of glazed glass.
they knew they were going to #war with #humanity, well it just carried on ,the war never did end :(

Today is the #December #Solstice, marking the start of #Winter in the #NorthernHemisphere and #Summer in the #SouthernHemisphere. It occurs when the #Sun is at its most southerly #zenith at midday. This year it is at about 21:48Z meaning that it will be somewhere precisely overhead in the southern #PacificOcean, but well to the east of the #InternationalDateLine. It also means that the Sun will set at its most southerly bearing of the year tonight giving you either the longest night (NH) or longest day (SH).

While I wouldn't say I'm a great fan of #cycling when it's barely above freezing, it does have certain likeable features. For a start I hardly sweat and the wind chill factor certainly wipes away any sleepiness and you can forget your other problems for a while. On the down side, my fingers and toes soon start to feel numb. Today is very #sunny and so I had the rather incongruous pleasure of wearing #sunglasses in #December. I also passed by a #PicketLine of #Striking #Nurses outside a small local community #hospital and so rang my bell and gave them a wave.

I did a short #hike in #Dartmoor yesterday. The wind was gusting to over 70 km/h and it was sometimes difficult to stay upright. The weather was very changeable and so we made sure that we were prepared with full waterproof attire, a map in a transparent sealed waterproof case.and some food and hot drinks for this #winter #excursion. Even for a brief trip, perhaps an hour and a half in duration, planning is important. In the photograph you can see the #BirchTor which we'd just been on from a couple of km distance.

The #geology of this #NationalPark is based on the #exposure of #weathered #Granite and #Tors are #outcrops found at the summit of #hills.
