It took way longer than it should have, but I eventually built a Dovecot plugin that adds support for SCRYPT (a password hashing algorithm). My poor cloud servers take too long to compute ARGON2 hashes (which are harder to attack than other algorithms), hence the plugin.

Some kind soul already wrote the code, but it didn’t work on modern versions of Dovecot, and I wanted it built into a Debian package I could add on to a Dovecot in a Docker image. So off to work.

Gitea has a built-in repository for Debian packages, and I used its Gitea Actions to automate the build, packaging and uploading, then I tweaked my Dovecot image to include my new repository and install the plugin from there.

I never built a Debian package before; it turns out that they’re quite simple most of the time, just the files/directories you want to install and some metadata files to indicate dependencies, architectures, versions, etc.

The hardest bit was understanding the API change and fixing the code. Along the way I learned more about Linux libraries and the tools for inspecting them.

All in all it was a fun side project to tackle. I learned the #Dovecot #API, #LibSodium, #Gitea Actions, #Linux libraries, and #Debian packaging. Not a bad way to spend a slow time in my work schedule.

Does anyone know if there is a possibility to allow users to submit an issue in #gitea / #forgejo without having to have an account on the instance? I wonder if there is a anonymous way to submit maybe protected by capture or email verification without account creation?

I asked the maintained if the #Arch #Linux #Gitea package if he plans to switch the upstream source to Forgejo and he responded that he does not plan to do so.
I don't want to share more details publicly.

What should we do with the gitea instance git.friendi.ca? Keep running gitea or switch to #Forgejo?

Interesting developments in #Gitea land. Sounds like a very positive thing overall, though it seems it's also causing a little friction within the community due to possibly not being prepared with actually asking the community about certain core assets like the domain and name now being owned by the company? Forming a non-profit to guard those sounds like a sane ask from the community to me. If the company doesn't agree, hope a too big rift wont happen with @{https://social.gitea.io/@gitea} and some of the old community.

The-Federation.info has a new maintainer 🥳

Starting in November 2013 as pods.jasonrobinson.me, later settling on https://the-federation.info, there have been many stages to this site over time. Initially a rather simple #NodeJS app, the frontend was completely overhauled by @{https://mastodon.social/@fla} into the style it is currently. Some years later a complete rewrite was done by myself to the current #Django / #VueJS stack.

After a few years of dropping into lack of maintenance due to lack of time from my part to contribute, the site has now finally found a new maintainer, @{https://chaos.social/@6543}, who is also active in the #Gitea project (which you may or may not know is also working on ActivityPub federation \o/).

The-federation.info is a rather dear project to me, and it makes me happy that it may still have a future with a new maintainer, instead of going into even worse disrepair and eventually shutting down. There is a rewrite planned to fix the horrible scalability issues the site has been suffering from (ever since adding ActivityPub protocol nodes into the mix), if you're interested see this issue.

I would also like to thank the various people who have helped maintain data over the years, hopefully you'll stick around to help the site grow in the future too! 💚

I just wanted to install updates on git.friendi.ca, when I found that the virtual HDD was pretty full, there were only 120 MB left.
Can you check if #gitea is running fine? Can you also check if there is any extensive archives stored that are not needed? I can and will add more storage to the VM, but I would like to know what are the expected needs. I guess code revision will take up some space, but I have no idea and feeling of how much space this takes up. Currently gitea uses about 6.6 GB in /var/lib

So the main goal is to check if the too less space caused any problems and second let me now about the expected needed space.
I guess another 10 GB should last for some time, but am not sure.
