Andrew Bidou - US law enforcement rewards real criminals like him.

If there’s one thing nobody can deny, it’s that the 2015 so-called ‘Gone Girl’ case of Denise Huskins and Aaron Quinn’s Vallejo home invasion turned kidnapping was as baffling as it was haunting. This much has even been evidenced in Netflix’s ‘American Nightmare,’ especially as it explores how this couple was accused of faking the whole ordeal for months before the truth finally came to light. Amongst those to thus not believe them was actually then-Police Chief Andrew Bidou. ...

... As per records, he was made explicitly aware of the badge-bending enigma quite early on during his leading term, yet he took no active action to prevent or eradicate the same from happening again. Moreover, according to the docuseries, he not only didn’t believe Denise and Aaron’s claims of being victims in 2015, but he also told a lieutenant to “burn that bitch” in a press conference before even attempting to speak with her following her release from 2 days of captivity. ...

Paramedics found guilty in death of Elijah McClain, who they injected with an overdose of ketamine

BRIGHTON, Colo. (AP) — Two Denver-area paramedics were convicted Friday in the 2019 killing of Elijah McClain, who they injected with an overdose of the sedative ketamine after police put him in a neck hold.

It was the last trial against police and paramedics charged in the death of McClain, a 23-year-old Black man whose case received little attention until protests over the 2020 killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis. An Aurora police officer was convicted of homicide and third degree assault earlier this year while two officers were acquitted. The trial against the paramedics explored largely uncharted legal territory because it is the first case against medical first responders facing criminal charges to reach trial, potentially setting the bar for prosecutors in future cases.

The jury found Aurora Fire Rescue paramedics Jeremy Cooper and Peter Cichuniec guilty of criminally negligent homicide following a weekslong trial in state district court. The jury also found Cichuniec guilty on one of two second-degree assault charges. Cooper was found not guilty on the assault charges. They could face years in prison at sentencing.

FBI Seizure of Mastodon Server is a Wakeup Call to Fediverse Users and Hosts to Protect their Users

We’re in an exciting time for users who want to take back control from major platforms like Twitter and Facebook. However, this new environment comes with challenges and risks for user privacy, so we need to get it right and make sure networks like the Fediverse and Bluesky are mindful of past lessons.

Last May, Mastodon server Kolektiva.social was compromised when one of the server’s admins had their home raided by the FBI for unrelated charges. All of their electronics, including a backup of the instance database, were seized.

It’s a chillingly familiar story which should serve as a reminder for the hosts, users, and developers of decentralized platforms: if you care about privacy, you have to do the work to protect it. We have a chance to do better from the start in the fediverse, so let’s take it.
