Feeeed is a reader app that goes beyond tracking RSS feeds with an extra bell and whistle

A mobile phone app screen showing a news feed with titles and a thumbnail image for each news item.
RSS feed apps are a really great way to focus on what you want to see and read about, but once you’ve read the feeds, the app is blank as it only shows what is in the specific feeds you chose.

Feeeed offers not only some extra integrations (like your own personal reminders, step count, etc), but also a bot that recommends some additional source selections.

Unlike other RSS readers, there is no read count to get through as the idea is to discover content rather than reaching “Inbox Zero” for a reader. But if you feel the urge to catch up to the latest posts, you can pin a “Latest” tab to the bottom bar.

It certainly shows that RSS feed apps need not just be basic feed apps only, and some extra bells and whistles can make them more interesting.

Elon Musk Gutted Their App. Now They Want To Make One That’s Billionaire-Proof: Tapestry will be RSS

Dead bird lying on someone's open palm
“Twitterrific was our flagship app, and by far earned the most of any of our pieces of software we’ve produced. Its loss is still being felt revenue-wise to this day. We’re hopeful that Tapestry will help us regain some of that ground and help us keep our company healthy, doing the things we love to do — developing great, friendly and useful apps for iOS and macOS.”

The linked article though is quite interesting in what it reveals from all of this. When you consider both Twitter and Reddit did this to their users and 3rd party devs, there is a trend towards these more private centralised social networks to have restrictions in the way of 3rd party access. Whilst on the decentralised social networks the trend tends to be using an open protocol, and usually also supporting open RSS feeds.

So, Tapestry is tapping into this more open ecosystem: “This isn’t really a social media client directly in the mold of Twitterrific; instead, it’s a single place to view online stuff that matters, and it mostly uses open standards like ActivityPub and RSS. Luckily for them, they’ve already reached their $100,000 minimum funding goal.”

Its intention is not to replace any existing clients, although with all the decentralised social networks I’ve been involved with, their devs all openly encourage having different 3rd party client apps.

But it’s what is not directly stated in the linked article that concerns me the most, and I’ve heard others also echoing this sentiment, especially some journalists who have “jumped ship” from Twitter to Mastodon and other networks. The issue is around quality content creation, especially news. It’s not that there is no such news on the decentralised social networks, it’s that there are still too many mainstream news services, journalists, and governments stuck fast on Twitter, Reddit, etc. So many users are also just stuck in their bubble in the same places.

We do really need to see that final seismic shift across to embracing an open and decentralised social network ecosystem. Certainly, the Fediverse, built on the ActivityPub protocol, is not the only option out there, but it is an open standard endorsed social network and has gained a lot of content and user traction.

The way I understand Tapestry, is that it would not only help provide an integrated (single) view of the Fediverse (yes most existing ActivityPub apps can also do that), but it can also seamlessly include discovering and following content from Bluesky, and many others, including potentially even Nostr (via RSS feeds).

So, Tapestry may help provide some cohesion and single view that many users and content creators, who are still stuck on Twitter, Reddit, etc, seem to crave/demand. Many such users are actually caught up in indecision over “where must I pick to move to”. With something like Tapestry, that fear may disappear, and for creators such as news and governments they would be more easily “found and followed” through one single app like Tapestry.

Will it happen? I think so as the vast majority of users are often solely content consumers, and whilst it is true that to develop a high-quality app from the ground up takes cash, Iconfactory does have that experience and they have raised over US$100,000 to fund their app development.

Who knows, I’d expect this app to even go further, and start to support likes and comments for some of the networks it integrates with over time.

Not only can any RSS reader follow a Mastodon Profile’s posts, they can also follow any Hashtags on a Server

Image of a Mastodon post explaining how an RSS feed can be dermined form any hashtag on a Mastodon server. For example to subscribe to the hashtag dogs on the mstdn.social server you'd use the RSS feed mstdn.social/tags/dogs.rss
In stark contrast to X yet again (and now the final straw for me) breaking API interaction with a profile, Mastodon makes it way easier to follow posts without even visiting the network. Many knew you could follow a profile’s posts via an RSS feed, but now we also find out you can even subscribe to all posts with a particular hashtag as well (again without registering or logging in, or even visiting Mastodon).

This openness combined with ActivityPub itself being declared the standard for social media by the W3C this year, is giving a strong indication of where things are headed for social media in the future. This is likely why even Meta’s Threads network has adopted the ActivityPub standard.

I’ve been testing out lots of different social media the last few years, and it is looking to me like the future will be decentralised and standards based. Centralised and walled garden networks have tended to be abused by advertisers, data mining, whims of a single billionaire owner, censorship, algorithmic feeds, and the ease of also banning a user account. On the other extreme, we have the extreme privacy of P2P networks, but they have difficulties on-boarding and also finding your friends.

Decentralised and federated networks do seem to have the attraction of easy on-boarding (once you have chosen an instance), some privacy in that you need not provide your phone number or even e-mail, extensive connectivity across servers as well as other networks (the Fediverse anyway), control over the home feed without algorithms, and easier discoverability.

The standard protocol applied across many networks means that app developers are also producing many different and useful mobile apps, where a single app can also work for different social networks on the Fediverse.

Many have become fed up also with some social networks pushing negative or alarmist posts into their feeds (despite them not following those posters). Not only for the Fediverse social networks not do such pushing, but with an RSS reader, you can follow your favourite posters or hashtags at a distance without even having to wade through a feed of posts. I certainly find using an RSS reader more relaxing and a less stressful way of consuming lots of news. So why not also for social networks?

Ever thought about why your own social network may not want you to follow posts and updates remotely? They want to be sure you have to login, and consume the feed presented to you. RSS readers also remove you from any of that pixel behaviour tracking analysis as well.

Looking for an RSS reader

Can anyone recommend an #RSS reader that can be synced using NextCloud’s file sync? (I know there is NextCloud News but this doesn’t work on my NextCloud which i get from disroot)

I’d like some application where i can save the state to files located in my NextCloud files directory. (I could export and then import but i don't want to have to do this when i start or exit my RSS reader, instead i'd like the process to happen automatically)

Wishlist:
* Works on Ubuntu
* Free software

Grateful for help with this!

Fluent Reader is a modern looking open-source desktop app for RSS News Reading

As per post title, with a blue logo with letter F
Are you frustrated with trying to source news about your interests from busy social media bias, or all the clutter and distractions of actual news websites? Don’t have time to visit 20 different websites to find your news? Or maybe your news for a site is only published every week or two, and you don’t want to miss it? This is where a good RSS reader can help you!

Unlike most commercial online RSS reader services which have limitations, or self-hosted services which are a bit more complicated to install and set-up, a desktop RSS reader is quick and easy to get going with.

I explain in this video why you may want to use an RSS reader, and also demonstrate how easy it is to use Fluent Reader, and what it does. It is cross-platform for Windows, Linux, and macOS and can sync reading progress across devices and even with mobile apps.
