Russian programmer says #FSB agents planted #spyware on his #Android phone

Source: https://techcrunch.com/2024/12/05/russian-programmer-says-fsb-agents-planted-spyware-on-his-android-phone/

According to the report, the fake app was able to access location information, read and send text messages, install other applications, read the calendar, take screenshots and record from the video camera, see a list of other applications, answer phone calls, and view user account details — all permissions that the real Cube Call Recorder does not have.

Is it True that People Just No Longer Care?

When #Microsoft turned to the Dark Side, I switched to #Linux. When my ISP started giving money to extremists, I switched. When #Google went from "don't be evil" to "let's spy on everyone," dumped all their products, from my #Android phone to their search engine. When #Mozilla and #Firefox went off the rails, I switched to privacy-respecting alternatives. When #Facebook went all kindsa wrong, I came here to #diaspora. Heck, even #Linux has up and gone crazy political, right down to the kernel itself. So again, I switched.

I'm told that I'm "too ideological" about these choices. And probably paranoid or something. Maybe so, but...

I can't possibly be the only one. Friends on the opposite side of me politically, religiously, morally, and otherwise are quick to #boycott, #censure, #block, and otherwise silence or restrict companies and individuals who don't share their #values. Yet if I boycott, block, or find an alternative (web-browser, ISP, operating system, whatever), I'm being "too ideological" and "paranoid."

Y'all wanna go ahead and just give away your data and stuff like it doesn't matter? Go ahead and click on the image above. If I'm too ideological, then y'all are either apothetic or willfully ignorant.

#Orbot lies brazenly to the user

Source: https://guardianproject.info/apps/org.torproject.android/

Orbot is a very useful app for using the #TOR #network on #Android. With all due respect to floss and the achievements of the altruistic developers, I still think it's downright cheeky to lie so blatantly to the user.

The bridge functionality, which can be optionally activated, allows users from the censored Internet, where all TOR servers are blocked, to connect anyway.

Orbot is writing:

It will not drain your battery

This is wrong. There will be more background activity for this connections and this will cost battery power. This is a damn lie!

It will not slow down your internet

This is wrong. There will be connections from others and they will slow down your internet. With a big bandwidth you won't note it but not everyone have high speed internet. This is a damm lie!

You can finally move your health data across Android devices — Can’t believe this was not backed up before

A furry green Android character. In front of it can be seen the top half of a smartphone screen showing the title Get started with Health Connect.
Since Google had moved Health Connect (the service that each health and exercise app can optionally sync to on Android) into the main Android device menu, I just assumed it was part of the device backup (E2EE if needed). Now it turns out that this was never the case. If so, this is terrible design, and I can’t imagine that Apple Health only exists on the user device with no sync or backup via Apple Cloud.

But OK, let’s move on. It seems now that backup is available, it is also not on by default (you must activate the backup schedule), and no it is not going to back up as part of the Android device sync (it exports to a local file, and you must back that up). Again, what a clunky implementation.

When I activated mine, I got the option to save my backup file to Proton Drive, which is perfectly fine for me. So it will back up to cloud services that you have active on your device (and you can import from them too). The linked article also mentions Google Drive, so I’d imagine if that is active on your device, you may see that as an option.
