Mozilla Revenue Jumped in 2023, But Search Deal Cash Fell

But let’s end on a positive note: Mozilla is still making money – good money (although roughly what Google makes in half a day). It has increased the value of its assets, and maintains a workforce full of enthusiastic, passionate, and intensely talented people.

And a lot of good will remains for Mozilla as it’s pretty much a lone voice shouting over tech giants’ manipulative algorithms intertwined with predatory ad practices, to remind us all that a web made by people, for people, is worth fighting for.

Switching to Firefox

by Asindu

December 07, 2024 • software

When ever you hear people trying to convince other people to switch to Firefox the reason is usually moral or ideological. 1
A usually toted reason, is that capitalist browsers like Chrome, Safari & Edge have too much market share. So we need to switch to the less pathologically operated Firefox — this post is not about that.
I recently switched to Firefox from Chrome. I felt like I was missing out on so much.
Chrome is simply no longer better than Firefox, features wise. Firefox is now the superior browser!

Is it True that People Just No Longer Care?

When #Microsoft turned to the Dark Side, I switched to #Linux. When my ISP started giving money to extremists, I switched. When #Google went from "don't be evil" to "let's spy on everyone," dumped all their products, from my #Android phone to their search engine. When #Mozilla and #Firefox went off the rails, I switched to privacy-respecting alternatives. When #Facebook went all kindsa wrong, I came here to #diaspora. Heck, even #Linux has up and gone crazy political, right down to the kernel itself. So again, I switched.

I'm told that I'm "too ideological" about these choices. And probably paranoid or something. Maybe so, but...

I can't possibly be the only one. Friends on the opposite side of me politically, religiously, morally, and otherwise are quick to #boycott, #censure, #block, and otherwise silence or restrict companies and individuals who don't share their #values. Yet if I boycott, block, or find an alternative (web-browser, ISP, operating system, whatever), I'm being "too ideological" and "paranoid."

Y'all wanna go ahead and just give away your data and stuff like it doesn't matter? Go ahead and click on the image above. If I'm too ideological, then y'all are either apothetic or willfully ignorant.

Apple Maps on Web Now Works on Linux (But Only in Firefox)

Desktop screen showing Firefox browser open, and displaying Apple Maps inside.
The screenshot above shows Mozilla Firefox 132 (running on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS) with the web version of Apple Maps successfully loaded.

All features work as they should, including search, directions, hybrid images, location detection, guides, places of interest, plus core interactive features like scrolling/zooming, and so on.

In other browsers, this is not the case.

Thing is, Linux users being able to access a competent alternative (not the only alternative, of course) to Google Maps is a good thing, even if most people would prefer to use another service, like OpenStreetMap.

🔥🦊 #Fire #Fox: One of the RAREST #Animals on #Earth! 📸❤️‍🔥
The #FireFox, a #rare variation of the #redfox with a melatonin alteration, constitutes less than 1% of the red fox population. Renowned for their intelligence, these unique foxes can be trained to hunt small animals like mice and rabbits.
Despite their rarity, sightings have been reported in diverse locations across the globe, including the United Kingdom, USA, Canada, Norway, and Japan.
