Cloudflare WARP has dramatically sped up my webpage loading on Linux

This sounds a bit like an advert, but I have tried to avoid use of Cloudflare (mainly because of how they intercept end-to-end SSL to speed up hosted services), but like it or not, I have seen a dramatic thing happen. Since moving to a new hosting service, the webpages there which I administer, take 30 to 60 seconds usually to load. I’ve tried different DNS providers as well as using my ExpressVPN and even changing browsers, but even other webpages were sluggish, taking a good few seconds to load.
So I saw this YouTube reviewer speaking about his experience with Cloudflare WARP, and I thought, what have I got to lose by just trying it as it costs nothing. For Manjaro (Arch based) Linux, I installed the warp-cli binary from AUR, and did the three or four steps to activate it. Well just wow, the same long loading pages now jumped up in about 1 second! Yes, WARP is technically a VPN, but I would not recommend it for privacy or security, just speed (if it helps you). I still have my ExpressVPN (and there is ProtonVPN) if you want to be more sure of privacy.

This may also help me try to pinpoint why I was getting such exceptionally bad load times before, as I can see the problem was not distance, nor my ISP link, computer or browser. It is likely some DNS or configuration issue. At least it shows it is not my new hosting that I moved to, or the docker setup I’m using.

Ultimate Guide to Traditional Shaving Practice because about 2 billion razors, including cartridges, are disposed of every year in the US alone

Wet shaving doesn’t involve some new disposable razors or cartridges, making it a more sustainable practice. Many shaving soaps and creams are in reusable containers, which means it is not as much waste if you are responsible. And check to make sure you are buying a biodegradable one, which means the little you throw away also doesn’t kill the planet.
A double-edged razor is an upgrade, no matter how you look at it. It is heavy and sturdy and better than a plastic razor. This one will also last longer, which is the cheaper option. You can pick from the many universally fitting blades available in the market. A straight razor also comes with the same benefits.

vutuv is a free and fast open source career network alternative to Microsoft’s LinkedIn, but without spamming and post updates

Think of it as a free, fast and secure open-source alternative for LinkedIn or XING (remembering that LinkedIn has featured plenty of times as the number one collector of user metadata, even above Facebook). This is one of the very few fully open source alternatives to LinkedIn. It is designed around speed and lack of clutter, so it is suited to slow network speeds.
Your profile consists of job experience listings as well as tags to identify your various skills. Users can follow and vote up those specified tags.

There are no status update posts, and also no user to user messaging, so this keeps everything very focussed and spam free. A profile can optionally publish an e-mail address, and have links to other sites and to social media accounts, as different ways to contact a person.

It’s not all perfect though as some concerns are the last code submit was 17 months ago, and users have been asking for a proper listing functionality for certifications and education, along with books / papers published, and also for Mastodon accounts to be linked to profiles.

French Ministry of Foreign Affairs launches open source toolbox to fight disinformation

On the occasion of the 2019 European elections and ahead of France’s 2022 presidential elections, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs launched in 2019 a toolbox of open source software and open resources to fight disinformation. As of December 2021, Internet users can access software to detect fake Twitter accounts, assess the legality of political advertisement on Facebook, and use multiple further resources on good practices to counter disinformation. Further work is ongoing to develop and deploy additional online resources.
Fake news, disinformation, misinformation: in the past decade, the manipulation of publicly available information on online platforms and social media soared tremendously in Europe and beyond. In 2018, 83% of respondents to a Eurobarometer survey indicated that fake news represent a danger to democracy.

PeerTube 4.0 (open source self-hosted decentralised alternative to YouTube) with channel customization, playlists search, custom instance homepage and more video filters is out!

PeerTube is decentralised by most useful definitions of the word. Anybody can run their own PeerTube instance, and the instances can follow (or “connect”) to each other to form a larger whole. This is not an option you have with YouTube.
When you watch a video on PeerTube the data will come from the instance hosting the video, any other instance that follows that instance and has redundancy enabled and other people watching the video at the same time as you do.

LinkAce – a free and open source self-hosted web bookmark archive

LinkAce is a self-hosted archive to collect links of your favourite websites. Save articles to read them later, tools to use them in your next project, or historic content to archive it for the long term. LinkAce comes with a lot of features while keeping a clean and minimal interface.
All saved links are monitored. Get a notification when a website moves or becomes unavailable. Links are backed up via the Internet Archive after you saved them. Choose tags to categorize links, add them to custom lists to group them by a topic or occasion.

Your link archive can be accessed by guests, or kept private. Links, tags and lists can be set private separately. Both private and public links are accessible via RSS feeds. Feeds are also available for tags and lists.

It will import from a browser’s bookmarks, and export to a browser, but it does not integrate with any browser bookmark systems. So it is a stand-alone solution. However, if you use different browsers this may be an interesting solution, or you like to share categories of links with others, or just keep track of links without having a bunch of dead links (most browser bookmarks don’t check validity of links).

Their site also has a demo you can try out. If you’re looking more for a Read It Later service though, Wallabag is probably more suited to that, although you could label a category as ‘Read Later’ and use it for that.

Signal significantly ups its end-to-end video group call limit to 40 people, making it pretty useful now

While WhatsApp and most other messengers support end-to-end encryption, Signal is probably still your best choice (of the popularly used options) when you want your conversations and calls to stay private. Given that all communication on Signal is encrypted, including group video calls, the company is running into some unique challenges that need to be addressed when scaling its service. As such, Signal has only supported group calls with up to five participants until now, but it has finally managed to significantly up the limit to 40 people at a time.

Large-scale phishing study shows who bites the bait more often in enterprises

A large-scale phishing study involving 14,733 participants over a 15-month experiment has produced some surprising findings that contradict previous research results that formed the basis for popular industry practices. The study was conducted by researchers at ETH Zurich in collaboration with an unnamed company that did not inform the participants about the simulated phishing program.
To conduct the test, the researchers sent fake phishing emails to participants’ regular work email and deployed an email client button that allowed them to report suspicious emails easily.

The iPhone 14 Pro’s Upgraded 48-Megapixel Camera is Expected to Work with Pixel Binning, like the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra uses

Already in use on some Android smartphones like Samsung’s Galaxy S21 Ultra, pixel binning merges data from multiple smaller pixels on the camera’s image sensor into one “super-pixel” for improved low-light sensitivity.
Pixel binning is beneficial because simply increasing a smartphone camera’s megapixels while maintaining the same camera sensor size results in smaller pixels, which generally capture less light, leading to lower-quality low-light photos. Pixel binning would allow iPhone 14 Pro models to shoot high-resolution 48-megapixel photos in bright conditions and 12-megapixel photos in low-light conditions that are still of high quality.

CanAirIO, a citizen science project that aims to gather air quality data from around the world by putting sensors into the hands of as many people as possible

Its team has developed two different sensor nodes for this purpose: an indoor one that can measure CO2, and a mobile one that can measure particulate matter (PM) levels. Both versions are powered by an ESP32 microcontroller that reads out the air quality sensors and connects to the Internet using Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. The data can then be shared online to create detailed maps showing local variations in air quality.

Create looping beats using Hydrogen, an open source drum machine

Much of today’s music features the exacting work of a drum machine. The term might make you think of a drum set with mechanical levers and cranks armed with drumsticks, but all it actually refers to is a synthesizer programmed to play drum sounds.
The excellent LMMS application contains a drum machine, and there’s the drumkv1 plugin for DAWs like Ardour, Qtractor, and Rosegarden. But there’s also the dedicated Hydrogen drum machine that has just one job, which it does very well, and has done for the past 20 years: be a great, fully-featured, and open source drum machine.

Apple releases Android app to help find sneaky AirTags, but it is manual scan and can’t actually use AirTags

Apple announced that this app was coming in June, promising that it would allow Android users to find potentially malicious trackers being used without their knowledge. Unlike on iOS, though, it doesn’t seem like this app will constantly do scans in the background and alert you if something is up — it’s purely a manual search. Tracker Detect also doesn’t help you keep track of the AirTags attached to an Apple account, so it’s not helping Android users actually use AirTags.
Good effort in developing such an app for Android, but it does seem to fall short of what the app could have really done.

Top 10 Linux Distributions for KDE Plasma Compared

KDE Plasma desktop is used by millions today. The KDE technology evolved over the years to reach a point where it is now running in desktops, laptops, tabs, mobile phones and hand-held gaming devices. It’s amazing, isn’t it, for a desktop environment? And with an active set of developers and community, it is improving every day with new features aligning with technology trends.
Since I discovered KDE many years ago (with Kubuntu), I was hooked. I progressed after that to Linux Mint’s KDE version, until I found Manjaro KDE in mid-2017 (where I am still happy today).

An original Gillette Fatboy D4 safety razor circa 1958 sells for R2,450 ($155) in South Africa today

I still have my dad’s old Gillette Fatboy razor, which he would have been using in the 1960’s. I cleaned it up and have shaved a few times with it, as of course as safety razor shavers around the world know, today’s DE blades still fit perfectly well. A safety razor is built to last multiple generations. Try that with today’s cartridge razors – you won’t find blades for them in 40 years time, or by then the blades purchased, will have bankrupted you!

How to Install Deb Package in Arch Linux with Debtap

If you’ve used Linux for any amount of time, you’ve noticed that one of the most common methods to install third-party applications is via a .Deb package. Often times this is the only way to get this software, as the developers can’t be bothered to go through the process of packaging in the dozens of different formats the Linux platform offers.
The AUR is the first place to check when looking for software that isn’t officially supported in Arch Linux. Always check here first. It’s a service that allows anyone to upload a PKGBUILD script, designed to automatically take software from various places, download some or all of the needed dependencies to run them and compile a native Arch Linux package.

Massive attack against 1.6 million WordPress sites underway

Wordfence analysts report having detected a massive wave of attacks in the last couple of days, originating from 16,000 IPs and targeting over 1.6 million WordPress sites.
The threat actors target four WordPress plugins and fifteen Epsilon Framework themes, one of which has no available patch.
Some of the targeted plugins were patched all the way back in 2018, while others had their vulnerabilities addressed as recently as this week.

You certainly always want to ensure you have a good security plugin installed which prevents brute force attacks, and that you only have the active themes and plugins installed, and that they are all set to auto update enabled.
