A Little Something

I don't know what love is
but maybe
it's something like this:

When she comes home from abroad
and proudly says to me, "I saw
a water rat"
and I remember those words
when I wake up in the night
and the next day at work
and I long to hear
her say those same words again
and also to have her look again
exactly the way she looked
when she said them -

I think maybe this is love
or something fairly similar.

Un'inezia

Non so cosa sia l'amore

ma forse

è qualcosa come:

Se lei 
ritorna a casa da un paese straniero

e mi dice con orgoglio: «Ho visto

un topo d'acqua»

e io mi ricordo di queste parole

quando la notte mi sveglio

e il giorno dopo al lavoro

e ho nostalgia

di ascoltarla

ripetere queste parole

e poi

che pronunciandole

mi appaia esattamente come quando

le pronunciò -



È forse questo, penso, l'amore

o qualcosa di non molto diverso.

Eine Kleinigkeit

Ich weiß nicht was Liebe ist

aber vielleicht

ist es etwas wie das:

Wenn sie nach Hause kommt aus dem Ausland

und stolz zu mir sagt: "Ich habe eine Wasserratte gesehen"

und ich erinnere mich an diese Worte

wenn ich aufwache in der Nacht

und am nächsten Tag bei der Arbeit

und ich sehne mich danach

sie dieselben Worte noch einmal sagen zu hören

und auch danach

dass sie nochmals

genau so aussehen soll

wie sie aussah

als sie sie sagte -

Ich denke, das ist vielleicht Liebe

oder doch etwas hinreichend Ähnliches
