Drone Fears Causing Binge Of Laser Strikes On Aircraft - FBI warns that laser attacks are serious business

One apparent consequence of the drone scare in the Northeast is a troubling uptick in reports of laser strikes on aircraft. Authorities believe observers on the ground are pointing pocket lasers at what they suspect are rogue drones. But in all but a few cases to date, suspected drones have been shown to actually be crewed aircraft, highly vulnerable to laser beams that can temporarily blind pilots and sometimes cause permanent eye damage.

Beware Of Flak Aimed At Rogue UAS - Why taking a potshot is such a bad idea

These days, New Jersey pilots may find themselves in a neighborhood gathering where other people are expressing frustration, fear and anger over the lack of answers regarding nighttime lights so widely reported in the sky. For those pilots who fly after sunset, it’s probably a good idea to speak up when the chants of “shoot ‘em down!” start. It’s increasingly likely that those folks are not fully aware that airliners, law enforcement aircraft and even innocent GA pilots could find themselves inadvertently in the crosshairs.

In preparation for an upcoming flight, today I successfully completed an instrument proficiency check (IPC). In a bit over an hour in the air, I did:
1. A VOR approach (ANE VOR 9);
2. A partial-panel ILS approach to minimums (200') (ANE ILS 27);
3. Unusual attitude recovery;
4. A GPS approach with a hold, circling (500') to a landing (MIC RNAV/GPS 14 CTL 32).

We do this with an instructor to maintain currency and proficiency while staying safe.

I was busy, but I flew well (no autopilot). It felt good to get back into the system and to still be able to do a difficult thing.

Fuel Exhaustion Forces Emergency Landing On Texas Road

A twin-engine Piper Navajo made an emergency landing on a busy road in Victoria, Texas, after running out of fuel, according to the FAA.
...
The FAA’s preliminary report noted the aircraft struck two vehicles before splitting in half at a busy intersection. Victoria police provided an update Thursday, confirming that three of the four people injured on the ground were treated and released from the hospital, while a fourth individual remains in stable condition. The pilot, who was the aircraft’s sole occupant, was also treated and discharged.

The pilot is going to wear that one.

‘Free Citizen’ Alaskan Pilot Convicted Of Flying Without Certificate - William Marsan faces up to three years in jail for federal convictions

The investigation revealed he hadn't had a valid medical since 2020 and requested the registration on his aircraft be canceled in 2022. The FAA issued an emergency revocation of his ATP in 2024, but he continued to fly the unregistered Cherokee Six. He represented himself at the trial, which lasted three days. Although he was arrested last September, he is not currently in custody and will be sentenced in April. He could be jailed for up to three years and fined $250,000 on each of the charges. Prosecutors also want the Cherokee seized.

Pilot Errors, Not Turbulence, Caused Fatal Upset - A cascading series of errors led to the inflight upset of a Challenger 300 that led to the death of passenger, according to the NTSB

This was a real lack of system knowledge on the part of the pilots:

The NTSB says the original error and subsequent panel warning was an easy fix. Had the crew contacted maintenance as required by the checklist, they would have been told to power down the airplane and restart it, clearing the errors that had been set during the aborted takeoff. The plane's systems had apparently functioned as designed throughout the incident.

Nighttime Highway Landing Leads To Fatal Traffic Crash

Though several cars were able to stop and initially avoid the Cessna, a pickup truck slammed into four vehicles, some of which then were pushed into the aircraft. One of two people in the cars reported to have serious injuries died Monday night. Two more suffered minor to moderate injuries.

The landing was safe, just drivers not paying attention to the road as usual.
