Sniff sniff....
Goodbye 1th Hour with Brian Williams
From staunch, arrogant, and humbled anchorman to panel-master and sardonic humorist in difficult times, you will be missed.
(Maddow going too, Cuomo gone, turnover in the cable news/analysis ranks. Age 61, he got some mighty praise from historians and journalists on his last show tonight. Not shuffled off his mortal coil, only leaving TV-land to explore life. Hope he keeps his humor!
And the other loss (amid a very bad time in general for losses) was in fact a death, but at a ripe old age: Lina Wertmuller, one of my favorite directors in the day, student of Fellini who had her characters jumping off the screen and captivating, as with one all-time favorite, Swept Away, with two great actors and a sharp look at both sexism and classism with a "spoiled rich bitch" tourist barking orders to an "ignorant fisherman" on a yacht, until they are shipwrecked. An epic battle ensues, and an exposition on both natural order (alphas, love, and romance) and the human spirit. Fine movie. Great film-maker. Rest in peace, end scene... swept away into cinema history.
