Homage to Annie Hall (1977, Woody Allen)

From a bygone era, both for society and the film-maker....
This was a movie which impacted our pre-Internet society in many ways: comedy/satire, fashion, dating, intellectualism...

I just shared this short-list with a colleague, noting how so many of my long-time interests in #psychology phenomena were stimulated (along with my funny bone) in this film classic.

The whole film can be found online these days, but here are 3 highlights which are now part of my DNA....
Since it's still formatted for 'here'/ pora* (my post, shared privately earlier), I suppose I should share it, prime-time #nostalgia....

This is my touchstone for “Woody Allen” films. As a young man who ‘fell in love’ with Diane Keaton (as did the fashion world) with this film, I was ‘imprinted’ to Annie Hall. Keaton was like a lovable hippie-type (70’s/NY) and Allen the ultimate NY neurotic. Three scenes I’ll never forget:

This one was ('appetizer') is a bit of ‘slapstick’, on 'dating' chemistry +/- :
Cooking Lobster

And this one below, I think, fed my interest in both psychology and the phenomenon of “airheads” and ‘elective ignorance’ (as we see these days too)…

It's a quick look (I think profound) at “intellectualism vs. happiness” - Woody Allen and Keaton see a happy-looking couple. Cynical Woody is in despair about how difficult it is to find happiness in a relationship. He asks for their secret:

'You look like a very happy couple'

And one more, for a trifecta of Annie Hall profundities - this one with Marshall McLuhan in a cameo. Here we see another blow at intellectual smugness, as - waiting in line for a show - Woody endures someone blathering away about ‘the meaning’… Love this one:

Annie Hall [Cinema scene, with Marshall McLuhan]

Hope one or more of these stimulates a smile or moment of thought!

For me, one of the best movies ever made, as craft, comedy, ensemble, & life…

Just to be sure the link I referred to - about the death of pioneering film director Lina Wertmüller -isn't skipped over.
Here is a clip of it in HD quality, lovely images and sound-track.... A very favorite film at the time.

Swept Away

RIP #LinaWertmuller #Wertmüller

A pioneering film director has left us.
As a psych student, I loved Swept Away! Two great actors & a sharp look at both sexism and classism - “spoiled rich bitch” tourist barking orders to an “ignorant fisherman” until... the two get shipwrecked, a “spoiled rich bitch” tourist barking orders to an “ignorant fisherman” until... a shipwreck. Roles are reversed. And again. Lots of deep stuff here about

It has English subtitles (you may need to click on the cog wheel on YouTube to turn it on). Important to catch the dialogue, like when he is thrashing her for all the social evils & institutions,

Great film (among others)... first woman director nominated
for an Academy Award. Actors are on fire too. Be sure to turn on the subtitles - unless you speak fluid (fast) Italian, of course.

Sniff sniff....

Goodbye 1th Hour with Brian Williams
From staunch, arrogant, and humbled anchorman to panel-master and sardonic humorist in difficult times, you will be missed.
(Maddow going too, Cuomo gone, turnover in the cable news/analysis ranks. Age 61, he got some mighty praise from historians and journalists on his last show tonight. Not shuffled off his mortal coil, only leaving TV-land to explore life. Hope he keeps his humor!

And the other loss (amid a very bad time in general for losses) was in fact a death, but at a ripe old age: Lina Wertmuller, one of my favorite directors in the day, student of Fellini who had her characters jumping off the screen and captivating, as with one all-time favorite, Swept Away, with two great actors and a sharp look at both sexism and classism with a "spoiled rich bitch" tourist barking orders to an "ignorant fisherman" on a yacht, until they are shipwrecked. An epic battle ensues, and an exposition on both natural order (alphas, love, and romance) and the human spirit. Fine movie. Great film-maker. Rest in peace, end scene... swept away into cinema history.

A favorite childhood memory...

Not at all as commentary or reflection on my adult understanding of the (first US) Civil War or Confederacy (though it could be)...
I saw this movie as a very young child and the cleverness of the lyrics & punchiness of the show music was embedded in my chip.

Maybe it's the vaccine which activated that chip! :)

Lil Abner - Jubilation T Cornpone

Just for pure fun now, an open tap on my 'puter for many months, maybe hesitant to post given today's climate, but.... hey. It's an old movie now! I love the guy's name as well as the fun staging. Context for non-Americans: it's a spoof about the southern confederate army attempting to defeat the Union (United States). In some ways still feeding feelings & divisions in the once/twice United States.
