"Bitcoin hat keinen Wert"

Das sagt Eswar Prasad, Cornell-Professor, in einem Interview über die Zukunft von Kryptowährungen in der nzz. Auch wenn der Kurs des Bitcoins seit Jahren steigt, sind seine Kursschwankungen auf die Dauer tödlich für die Nutzung als "Ersatzgeld" für staatliche Währungen.

Insbesondere vielen anderen Kryptowährungen, die neben dem Bitcoin entstanden sind und je nach dem mehr oder weniger im Kurs steigen oder fallen, sind völlig ohne Wert und dienen nur der Spekulation. Dies gilt erst recht, wenn sie nicht einmal durch eine Blockchain abgesichert werden oder diese Blockchain nicht öffentlich zugänglich und kontrollierbar ist.

Allein in der Blockchain sieht Professor Prasad die wirkliche Innovation und befürwortet andere Anwendungen damit, wie z.B. das Vertragswesen, da es die (im allgemeinen teuren) Treuhandinstanzen von Notaren, Rechtsanwälten, Grundbuchämtern, ... ersetzen kann. Im Finanzsektor können (evtl. spekulative) sogenannte Defi-Angebote entstehen, bei denen Sparer und Kreditnehmer automatisch und direkt zusammengebracht werden. Diese können einen Preisdruck auf die Banken ausüben, sind mit Gewinnversprechen von 5-15% aber rein spekulativ.

Gefragt nach den grundsätzlichen Möglichkeiten von Kryptowährungen meint er

• zum Bitcoin:
  • zu langsam und auch teuer
  • nicht nachhaltig
  • die Begrenzheit auf 20 Millionen ist positiv aber kein Wert an sich
  • die offene dezentrale Blockchain stärkt das Vertrauen
• andere Kryptowährungen (s.o.)
  • alle ohne offene Blockchain sind nicht vertrauenswürdig
  • StableCoins, die durch reale Währungen gedeckt werden mögen einen Wert haben, sind aber nur Spekulationsobjekte
  • Transaktionen mit StableCoins müssen jeweils von spezifischen Drittparteien bestätigt werden (denen man traut oder nicht)
• Kryptowährungen von Staaten oder Global Playern (wie z.B. Facebooks Libra, derzeit umbenannt in Diem) ° werden kommen

Die Staatsbanken werden alles tun, die Dominanz einer privaten (Krypto-) Währung zu verhindern und dazu haben sie auch im Fall von Facebook mit über 2 Millarden Nutzern noch die Macht. Ihre eigenen Kryptowährungen, wie der eCNY oder besser der digitale Yuan werden eingeführt. Der Grund dafür ist nicht den Zahlungsverkehr zu verbessern, denn dieser funktioniert mit Alipay und WeChat bereits sehr gut. Es geht um Kontrolle, denn mit digitalen Transaktionen sind eine Menge an weiteren Daten verfügbar und anonyme Zahlungsmöglichkeiten werden schwierig werden.
