Fixed star Zubenelgenubi, Alpha Librae, is a 2.7 magnitude pale #yellow and light #gray double star in the Southern Scale of the Balance, #Libra #Constellation. The traditional name Zubenelgenubi, or Zuben Elgenubi, is from the Arabic ّالزُبَانَى الجَنُوبِي (al-zubānā al-janūbiyy} which means the southern #claw. Before the Scales were made separate constellation, it formed the claws of #Scorpius Constellation.

Zubenelgenubi Star Astrology
Symbolically called the Insufficient Price. Of the nature of #Saturn and #Mars (bold, cruel, heartless, adulterous, criminal, liar, loss of estates, poverty, few friends.) It causes malevolence, obstruction, an unforgiving character, violence, disease, lying, crime, disgrace, and danger of poison. [1]
The Southern Scales is a double star. Its brighter partner is of Mars character with a weak blend of Saturn. The unhelpful influence of this star is said to be noticeable, especially in natives who were born during the night. A bad omen for health of the native is given if Sun or Moon is in conjunction with the Southern Scales. It has been noted that it is particularly disadvantageous to have Saturn or Neptune tied up with this star. Even the conjunction with Jupiter is credited as being adverse. Vehlow has recorded the “confiscation of possessions during times of war’. A credit given to the Southern and Northern Scales is that they both bestow an immortal name. However, this comes about more by tragic circumstances than by well-noted success. [2]
South Scale was classified by Ptolemy as a Jupiter-Mars star, not unfitting for the prime star in the Sign which has so much to do with justice, whose feminine personification on the dome of London’s ‘Old Bailey’ court is a lady with the scales of Libra in one hand, and the martian sword in the other. Jupiter is fair and merciful, even though he must point a sword to the guilty, beneficent to the plaintiff who has been wronged.
Not that human judges always measure up to that high ideal, and that means all of us in our judgment of others, not just those paid for the job. South Scale as an astrological feature contains all of that allegory: well aspected and on the ‘right’ planet in a horoscope, we have someone of courage to fight for right, but generosity to his opponents when they are defeated. If harshly aspected, especially to Mars, Saturn or Moon, justice may well take a back seat to vengeance. Such a person does well not to get into any kind of job where he can use his power, for surely he will himself live to regret it in public dishonor or worse.
It is well to remember here the other association of this star with a scorpion’s claw, used for making love as well as for slaying its prey. It does not let go until one or other matter is complete, and onlookers are not sure which of the two acts is actually in process. Sometimes even the Scorpion seems to get it wrong along the way! Humans engaged in a relationship with others, marital, judicious or whatever, need to keep a very clear head and hearts if this star is strong with them. It frequently shows up ill-aspected in many unfortunate situations, from domestic strife and miscarriages of justice to psychopathic killings that started out in the guise of love. But again, its appearance in better aspect is often just the right moment to repair a relationship and to reconsider an earlier harsh judgment. [3]
Zubeneschamali, or the Northern Scale, is considered a very fruitful star. The Chaldeans believed that when this star was clear the crops would be good. In genethiacal charts, this star gives riches, honor, and good fortune. Classical astrologers believed the same concerning the Southern Scale, Zubenelgenubi, but to a lesser degree corresponding to the difference in influence between Jupiter and Venus. Modern astrologers, however, assert just the opposite, claiming ruin and disgrace and even violence in connection with the Southern Scale. [4]
