One century ago, the Soviet Union broke up the power of the national church. They set up an oppressive atheist regime, yet by making the mistake of allowing church remnants to survive under communist rule, allowed a cancer of the Russian society to reinfect the society. Russian Christian theocrats now control American politics and manipulate American elections.

So both Christianity and atheism have failed miserably to provide protection of basic human rights. Christianity reduces humans to sinners in need of control, to serve the good of the church. Atheistic communism reduces humans to soul-less material machines who have no innate rights, who serve the good of the state.

A new spirituality is needed in America to affirm the rights and dignity of human beings and all life. Otherwise we will destroy our planet, all life on it, and each other.

With this new spirituality, we need to restore the better ideals of our founders, that all humans are "created equal in the eyes of their creator," that humans all have the dignity of being sacred, that basic human rights are not to be violated for political convenience. We must also recognize that religious freedom has its limitations and that religious organizations are not above the law, are accountable to government justice and not their own manipulations, and deserve to be taxed as any other organizations receiving the benefits of the society as a whole.

Without a spiritual renewal, Americans will remain helpless in even providing basic human rights to our fellow citizens, to immigrants who illegally cross our borders, and to the children who are the ultimate victims of all church and government corruption.
