Ukraine uses #FrankenSAM hybrid system for first time, downs Russian kamikaze drone

Ukraine used the first hybrid air defense system under the FrankenSAM program, a joint project between the U.S. and Ukraine, to shoot down a #Shahed drone launched by Russia on Jan. 17

"One of these systems was successfully used for the first time last night. We shot down a kamikaze drone from a distance of nine kilometers," Kamyshin said.

As further military aid packages for Ukraine remain stalled in Congress, the joint project, which combines old Soviet-era surface-to-air missile systems with new U.S.-made missiles and radars, has been a way for Ukraine to continue its fight against Russia in the meantime.

The AP earlier reported that U.S. engineers have been able to work with Ukraine to modify its numerous Soviet-era Buk air defense launchers to fire RIM-7 missiles, of which the U.S. has large stockpiles.

According to Kamyshin, five projects have been developed under the FrankenSAM concept. All the systems have already been deployed on the battlefield.

Ukraine wants to receive long-range missiles from the West to attack targets in #Russia, #Iran and #Syria, where the #Shahed #drones are produced.

This is reported by The #Guardian with reference to the secret 47-page document that #Kiev has sent to its Western partners.

"The above may be carried out by the Ukrainian defence forces if partners provide the necessary means of destruction," Kiev suggests.

According to the article, "52 electrical components manufactured by western companies were found in the Shahed-131 drone and 57 in the Shahed-136 model, which has a flight range of 2,000km and cruising speed of 180kmh."

Meanwhile, almost all imports to Iran come from #Turkey, #India, #Kazakhstan, #Uzbekistan, #Vietnam and #CostaRica (funny they excluded China and UAE/Farhad)

According to the document, Iran has already diversified its production by using a Syrian factory with delivery to the Russian port of #Novorossiysk. It is also moving drone production to Russia's #Tatarstan.

The document says that the Iranian government is trying to "disassociate itself from providing Russia with weapons" and "cannot cope with Russian demand and the intensity of use in #Ukraine".

#Ukraine claims Russia launched seven Onyx cruise missiles, four Kh-22 cruise missiles, three Kalibr cruise missiles, five Iskander-K cruise missiles and 19 Shahed kamikaze drones last night.

According to the Air Force Command, they shot down 2 #Kalibr cruise missiles, 3 #Iskander-K and 13 Shahed (Geran 2) kamikaze drones.

PS. It is amazing that Ukraine sources still refer to Geran-2 as #Shahed to connect Iran to this war. The nonsense stories of Iran supplying 100, then 200 and then 300 missiles keep changing as #Russia keep using these drones in large attacks against Ukrainian targets. /Farhad

According to news sources in Iran, the first batch of Iranian #Shahed drones will arrive in #Armenia sometimes next week!

This is the first official announcement by the IRI regime about the sale of it's low cost (less than $20k) #kamikaze #drones.

There are also reports of negotiations between #Tajikistan and Iran's regime to purchase a range of reconnaissance and attack drones from #Iran. No specifics about the negotiations has been made public.

In another news, the head of #IRGC defence industrial group said that some 20 countries have shown interests in purchasing Iranian made drones, but failed to mention the names.

It is sad that the only thing #IRI is exporting is death and destruction!
