Iran and Iraq just signed an agreement to build a railroad between Shalamche and Basra, for the price of 215 billion Iraqi dinar!

During the 8 years of Iraq-Iran war, 10s of thousands of Iranians died on the island when trying to "liberate" Basra. The island has been closed to public because it is filled with landmines left over since the end of 1980-88 war.

The contact is for an Iranian company to build a bridge as well as railroads connecting the island to the port city of Basra and then connect it to the Iranian railroad in Khorramshahr.
