According to Iraqi sources, a truck ran over 50 students while they were leaving the school in al-Haritha area in Basra, causing the death of 20 of them as initial casualties.

During the 8 years of Iraq-Iran war, 10s of thousands of Iranians died on the island when trying to "liberate" Basra. The island has been closed to public because it is filled with landmines left over since the end of 1980-88 war.
The contact is for an Iranian company to build a bridge as well as railroads connecting the island to the port city of Basra and then connect it to the Iranian railroad in Khorramshahr.
