#skating
We dropped by the artificially-cooled #skating rink in Lonsdale in #Vancouver, but it was all melted.
@Kathryn Barr and I went to downtown #Ottawa this morning to #skate on the Rink of Dreams. It was great: just cold enough at -5°C and a windchill of -9 with some sunshine. After #skating, the #BeaverTails stand opened at 1100 hrs and Kathryn bought us one each. Hers was a Killaloe Sunrise and mine was a BrWOWnieTM. We ate those while the #Zamboni worked on the ice surface.
#ice #skating #newjersey #photography
It took me years to remember, and then to find a photograph of the place where I went ice skating in New Jersey. I was in Middle School. The place was Goat Hill, along Coon Path ~ in the woods. That's where I went with others from school, and I learned how to ice skate there on a frozen pond.
The photograph is exactly how I remember the location. I was thrilled to see it!!
Rideau Canal to Close for Skating
We got a total of tens days this year, only a small portion open and never rated better than "poor". Most years get 40-50 days, the full 7.8 open and rathed at least "good" or better.
The Rideau Canal Skateway is currently open from Bank to Pretoria. It will close at 10 pm this evening, Sunday, February 25, 2024. Thank you to everyone who came out to enjoy the Skateway and to our concessions and hard working crews who made the most of challenging weather conditions.
Caution! Uneven ice surface with rough patches and many pressure cracks. Due to the mild temperatures, the ice surface has deteriorated and is now soft.
Rideau Canal Re-Opens for Skating
With the temperature at -13°C (8°F) and a windchill of -20C (4°F) the canal looks like it will reopen for one last day before everything melts. Only a short portion of under 2 km will open at noon and it is only rated as "poor". If this is it for this winter then it will have been open only nine days, only a small section and never rated better than "poor".
@Kathryn Barr and I don't skate on it unless it is rated "good" or "very good" as "poor" is damn dangerous for surface conditions. Even "fair" is not good enough to skate with any degree of safety.
The official webcam photo below shows prep underway this morning.
@Kathryn Barr and I went to go #skating this morning and discovered that our usually quiet public skating session had been invaded by three or four kindergarten or grade one classes. At one point we had about 80 kids there. Very few of the kids could actually skate, so mostly didn't move a lot, but it made the skate a challenging obstacle course for the seniors who did show up to skate.
