U.S. weapons system has landed and is “in place” in Israel, U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd J. #Austin said on Monday.
The Terminal High Altitude Area Defense ( #THAAD) system, worth between roughly $1 billion to $1.8 billion and made by Lockheed Martin, is an anti-missile system that can intercept ballistic missiles at high altitudes.
This marks its first presence after the United States shipment.

The cost of a THAAD system without a radar is approximately $2.3 billion. According to another source, a THAAD complex is estimated to cost around $3 billion. The AN/TPY-2 radar costs $574 million.
In 2011, 22 missiles were purchased for $1 billion, in 2012 - 42 missiles for $999 million, and in 2013 it was planned to purchase 36 missiles for $777 million (for the US). R&D is estimated to cost around $15 billion. The history of THAAD began with R&D in 1992 by Lockheed (now Lockheed-Martin). In early 1995, prototypes of launchers, GBR-T radar and command post were deployed at a test site in New Mexico.
