Green MP, Caroline Lucas flagged by disinformation unit over Covid criticism

The Tory government “has dangerously blurred the lines between genuine disinformation and legitimate political dissent”.

The Green party MP Caroline Lucas has called for an inquiry into a government unit intended to combat disinformation after it emerged she had been flagged by it for criticisms of ministers and government policy over Covid.

Lucas, who lodged a subject access request along with the campaign group Big Brother Watch for details held on her by the counter-disinformation unit (CDU), said her inclusion in a series of reports amounted to “staggering overreach” by ministers.

Patients contacting NHS 111 in England are having to wait so long for medical help that they are abandoning millions of calls, with 3.6m ditched in the past 12 months, official figures reveal.

“The Conservative government’s record on health has been a shambles and today’s figures are yet further proof that we cannot trust them to run the NHS.”

Nationalise Bulb (don't bail it out)

The government is planning to spend £2.2 billion bailing out private energy company Bulb (which collapsed last year).

Now they want to pay Octopus a further £1 billion to take it over.

This makes no sense.

Now is the perfect time to set up a publicly owned company like EDF in France which has kept their bill rises to only 4%.

Brace yourselves: New UK Data Laws are Coming

The Government have just announced their plans to gut the UK General Data Protection Regulation.

They are proposing to bonfire your rights and remove the protections the law affords to your:- Private life
- Vulnerabilities
- Aspirations.

This is but a natural product of poor proposals being discussed in a rigged consultation process.

Big multinational corporations, their lawyers, and corporate-funded think tanks were advising the Government on how to keep our data safe, courtesy of the “International Data Transfers Expert Council”.

At the same time, the Department for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport were taking care of ignoring the critical voices of civil society and ordinary citizens, in a delicate balance of arbitrary cherry-picking and a smokescreen of wishful thinking.

The outcome of such a shiny example of integrity in policymaking is rather damning.

According to what the Government have announced, individuals would lose protections against discrimination and abuses, only to get less choices in return.

Dodgy businesses would get their licence to be malicious, reckless, and to launder your personal data overseas, far from your eyes and those of the Regulators.

The cherry on the cake, the Information Commissioner’s Office (the Regulator) would be coopted by the same Government they should keep an eye on.

Don't electronically tag innocent people for attending protests

The Government’s new Public Order Bill would allow police to put innocent people on electronic ankle tags and ban them from attending marches and demonstrations.

Campaigners and people who want to attend a protest need not have ever committed any offence in order to be given a so-called “protest banning order” by the police.

Under this new anti-protest law, the police will be given powers to:

  • Monitor campaigners using electronic GPS tags
  • Restrict their internet activities
  • Prevent them from attending protests

These are some of the most disturbing and anti-democratic police powers introduced in the UK for decades.

These extreme police powers would be controversial in Russia and China – we cannot allow them in a democratic country like the UK. If thousands of us sign this petition, we can make Priti Patel drop these dangerous new powers.
