Using anti-inflammatory drugs and steroids to relieve pain could increase the chances of developing chronic pain, according to researchers from McGill University and colleagues in Italy. Their research puts into question conventional practices used to alleviate pain. Normal recovery from a painful injury involves inflammation and blocking that inflammation with drugs could lead to harder-to-treat pain.

“For many decades it’s been standard medical practice to treat pain with anti-inflammatory drugs. But we found that this short-term fix could lead to longer-term problems,” says Jeffrey Mogil, a Professor in the Department of Psychology at McGill University and E. P. Taylor Chair in Pain Studies.

Please consider first using natural and effective treatments for pain, such as acupuncture, so the development of chronic pain can be prevented.

The past decade have witnessed the rapid development of acupuncture research about migraine, and many high-quality papers have been published, especially after 2016 (He et al., 2022).
Acupuncture research has grown markedly in the past two decades, with a 2-fold higher growth rate than for biomedical research overall. Both the increases in the proportion of RCTs and the impact factor of journals support that the quality of published research has improved (Ma et al., 2016).

Pins in Your #Ears: How #Acupuncture Can Help #Relieve Your #Pain

In Chinese medicine, acupuncture dates back more than 2000 years. The Military Health System has developed a modern modification of this ancient practice, known as Battlefield Acupuncture, or #BFA.
Military health care providers are finding that ear acupuncture, which involves inserting small needles into different areas of the ear, is successful in relieving pain of injured or ill service members.

"BFA is highly effective and markedly alleviates acute or chronic pain in approximately 80-85% of patients," regardless of the underlying cause, said Dr. Jeff Leggit, a professor and medical acupuncturist at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences [https://www.usuhs.edu/], in Bethesda, Maryland.

ACUPUNCTURISTS WITHOUT BORDERS IS ORGANIZING IN THE NETHERLANDS

Acupuncturists Without Borders (AWB) is actively organizing support for people being forced to flee Ukraine, including Ukrainian citizens, students and migrants from other countries, and
refugees from Africa and the Middle East who once again have to find safe haven.

Currently, in the Netherlands we are:
* Identifying and securing locations for pop-up clinics, to treat refugees. Pop-up clinic sites need to be clean, safe spaces. We will be providing auricular treatments, therefore we will not need treatment tables! Patients just need comfortable seating. Ideally, we would have a 4 hour time block for set up/breakdown, and to administer treatments on a rolling basis. Depending on the availability of space and volunteer practitioners, we can set up sites at multiple locations, with a minimum frequency of every other week. We also want to make sure locations are as close as possible to where refugees will be staying, so they do not have to go far. If you have leads on potential clinic sites, please let us know as soon as possible

  • Organizing supplies and donations. We will need seating, needles, alcohol swabs, sharps containers, mouth caps, and everything else you can think of

  • Starting to screen interested volunteers. All practitioners are welcome. We would especially love to work with local Acupuncture schools, to give student acupuncturists an opportunity to gain clinical experience by treating incoming refugees.
While we appreciate the interest of many people to provide direct services, we have to establish a workable service infrastructure rst. This takes time, money, planning, and help with administration, logistics, public outreach and resource mobilization on the ground. Please let us know if you can contribute any of these skills/actions to this effort!

Information is updated every few days on our website: https://acuwithoutborders.org/ukraine.
