My Solar Exploits

Having some issues with batteries. Had a battery undervoltage fault (on battery #2) yesterday which forced the inverter to grid bypass mode.
this was because one cell (of the sixteen in each battery) in one (of the five) batteries dropped below a threshold and more or less shut the whole system down.

I've now gone through the process of charging the entire battery system from the grid (overnight) but one battery (battery #3 ..i.e. not the one that had the under voltage cell) would not/did not fully charge to 100% State of Charge.

I figured resetting the battery might clear it but that had other consequences where were that it went back to normal operation once the uncharged battery was offline. So now I have a higher state of charge overall but mismatched battery levels (which actually was likely what started this whole mess and the system has never been fully charged or fully discharged since the batteries were all added at different times and in different states of charge.

Lordy....I didn't know what I was getting myself into. I just assumed between the Inverter monitoring, charging, etc. and the BMS (battery management system) built into each battery this would all take care of itself but so far I'm finding it a FULL TIME BABYSITTING JOB!

Plug and Play My ASS!

Recycling the World’s Batteries | Emma Nehrenheim | TED

Battery recycling pioneer Emma Nehrenheim. While batteries are fundamental topowering a sustainable future, their production is surprisingly harsh on the environment. She lays out the science behind a breakthrough in recycling a battery’s core elements, offering a manufacturing solution that could vastly reduce the industry’s environmental impact.

Exercise bike inspired by Ukraine war provides backup power during emergencies but why not anytime

Three portable exercise bikes, one fitted with a small horizontal platform that serves as a desk surface.
The exercise bike, dubbed HR Bank, was designed to provide urban dwellers with a reliable source of clean energy, but, perhaps more importantly, also for those in need of power during emergencies like natural disasters or wars.

“Our idea was that a person who bought an HR bank could not only use it as an external battery, charged from the sun or the grid, but in the absence of an external power source, could generate energy by pedalling,” said CEO Jonas Navickas.

A lot of thought has gone into this design with it not only being portable, but also storing a very useful 2kWh of power. Pedalling is not its only source of energy as it can also charge from the grid, car batteries, solar or wind power.

It is not only a clean source of power, but pedalling daily on it will help keep its owner fitter and healthier too.

The downside probably is the price of around €3,000 but I suppose you have to factor in it is a very useful battery storage, an exercise bike, and an emergency generator all rolled into one (saving some space too).

EU risks depending on China for batteries after dropping Russian energy

By 2030, the European Union could become as dependent on lithium-ion batteries and fuel cells from China as it was on Russian energy supplies before the war against Ukraine

Without implementing strong measures, the European energy ecosystem could have a dependency on China by 2030 of a different nature, but with a similar severity, from the one it had on Russia before the invasion of Ukraine.

This is pretty dissapointing. If you want the larger output from the PW3 you are saddled with having integrated useless string inverters. The solar industry has largely moved on to EnPhase microinverters and SolarEdge optimizers+inverter. You will still need the PW2 if you want to connect to those inverters.

Also keeping the same energy is pretty lame. With an 11kW output the thing will be depleted in a little over an hour. They should have moved to 25kWh building blocks. 25,50,75,100 very simple and easy… 13.5 is just weird.

Then there is cost… This is the same exact company that sells EV batteries for 1/5th the cost per kWh. There is literally no justificiation they can make for this cost difference since their cells are the same and made in-house it’s a direct comparison. I can at least give other companies a bit of credit since they have to acquire cells from suppliers. The margins on these things are insane.
