Glasgow commuters stranded as freezing weather plagues electric buses

The freezing weather last week disrupted #Glasgow's #electric #buses, causing their batteries to drain faster than usual, and leaving people stranded during their commute.

Some of First Bus’s double-deckers were halted mid-journey due to the freezing temperatures.

I've less confidence in battery powered airliners. It's a bit chilly at altitude.

Saw a remark in an EV review saying it was not practical to tow a trailer cross country with an EV because of charging station logistics, i.e. that you have to disconnect your trailer to charge. I plan to do some towing so I asked my brother and sister in law who travel around the country in their Rivian towing a wonderful little swiss army knife living trailer. (No, this is not a picture of them but is similar.) His response was:

With close to 8k miles towing with the Rivian I think we have had to disconnect the trailer only twice. Sometimes you do have to get creative when parking at the charging station but it has not been a problem. All part of the adventure.

Hyundai Has Best Month Ever in U.S. Electric SUV Sales Suddenly Double

Hyundai IONIQ 5 SUV also setting a new U.S. record after sales more than doubled in November. With 76,008 vehicles sold in November, Hyundai's record-breaking U.S. sales streak is not slowing down. Hyundai Motor America CEO Randy Parker credited the growing demand for EVs and hybrid vehicles to the growth.
\
Hyundai's EV sales rose 77% from last year, while hybrid sales surged 104%. Electrified retail sales (EV, PHEV, and hybrid models) climbed 92% in total last month. Several vehicles, including the Santa Fe HEV, Tucson PHEV, Tucson HEV, and IONIQ 5, had their best-ever sales month.

Why electric car charging stations are expensive in South Africa

A black colour Volvo SUV parked next to an EV charging station. There is a black cable connected between the charging station and the rear left side of the car.
Well, no surprise as SA government already applies and over and above tax on all EV imports. SA liquid fuels are also very heavily taxed.

And with fast charging stations, there are already a few middle-people adding their mark-ups. I don’t think, even yet, SA government has added any road levy taxes to these charging stations.

I know there are discussions on the go about reducing import levies, as well as road taxes, but right now in SA owning an EV is purely a rich person’s pursuit.

Technically, EVs could be very cost-effective to operate, even given the standard residential electricity tariffs. But right now is just not the time. Other countries in Africa are already offering better incentives, and even manufacturing and exporting their own EV buses.

As far as EVs go, South Africa has somewhat missed the bus.

Successful South African electric vehicle maker that few people know about

A three wheeled delivery van that is completely covered with an enclosed cargo area at the back. A sign on the side says mellowvans 100% electric.
South African firm MellowVans is seeing massive demand for its groundbreaking three-wheeled electric vehicle (EV), which aims to combine the best features of motorcycles with light vans for last-mile cargo transport and courier deliveries.

After its tremendous success in South Africa over the past decade, the MellowVan is poised to make big waves overseas.

The EV is the first vehicle from a South African automotive original equipment manufacturer to achieve European and British homologation, a long and costly process that makes a vehicle road legal in a particular jurisdiction.

According to the company’s website, a MellowVan delivery with a driver is around R16.94, compared with the R32.36 it would cost to deliver the same amount of goods via two petrol-powered motorcycles.

Yes, it’s true that many of us just assume when we see these vehicles, they are Chinese imports. But this is far from the case, and it is impressive to see what thought has gone into the design, right down to the transporting of perishable goods and medical supplies.

“Total practicality” seems to permeate through the design and operation of these vehicles. It charges anywhere, the driver is protected from the elements, it can carry more cargo than a normal scooter or motorcycle, it is environmentally friendly, and it costs less to operate than a conventional motorcycle.

It has won international awards already, and has already started to export its first vans to Europe (I’m assuming Europe does not charge an extra import duty on EV imports like South Africa does).\

South Africa’s first electric minibus taxi to hit the road in Cape Town

A white minibus taxi with words over the rear window stating "This Minibus is electric" and a model name seen is HIGER.
Christened the eKamva (kamva is the Xhosa word for future), the 15-seater battery-powered minibus is supported by a cluster of dedicated “taxi-rank adjacent” charging stations to support the taxi industry’s transition to electric mobility.

Coetzee said the DC charging hubs to support its electric taxis provide 60kW and are able to charge the eKamva to 80% capacity in an hour, with a full charge taking 75 minutes. eKamva delivers cost savings of between 40% and 70% on running costs compared traditional internal combustion engine vehicles of a similar build, he said.

According to Coetzee, much of the cost savings promised by eKamva relate to the fact that the vehicle has only eight moving parts compared to the complexity of a traditional petrol- or diesel-powered taxi. “There are no oil filters and air filters, spark plugs or oil to change, so it is much easier to maintain. There are also fewer points of [possible] failure.

I’m blown away that the usual 40% tax on EV imports will also apply to these vehicles (South Africa really needs to sort this out, as these are not “luxury vehicles”).

I just dread to think what could happen though when drivers discover the acceleration that an EV motor has. It could be great for safer overtaking, but we’ll really have to see how this pans out.

The last paragraph in the linked article s very interesting about future plans for driver safety monitoring. As far as any public transport drivers go, this is probably a good thing.

It Turns Out Charging Stations Are Cash Cows For Nearby Businesses

When people ask me how long it takes me to top off while charging, I often give them the same spiel: "Long enough for me to use the bathroom, grab a snack or drink, and walk back to the car." It turns out I'm not alone.

A new study from MIT has confirmed what most of us have already suspected: EV charging stations aren't just better for the environment; they're also money printers. And it's not just charging network providers who see green—so do nearby shops.
