Well hello!

Circling back to Thursday’s topic of trying new physical activities, I tried a new self care thing – MELT. It's supposed to hydrate your fascia🤷🏽‍♀️ There’s a before and after self assessment so you can see how you’ve progressed after the series of moves; in the end you become very aware of your body. The rebalancing sequence is really interesting and can help with balance. Part of it is called 3D breathing where you breath to move above your belly button, each side of your abdomen separately then the lower belly. I was very surprised that, after doing the sequence a few time I felt like I was breathing in different areas of my abdomen even though I don’t think that’s possible.

What do you do to unwind? Distracting activity or stillness? Have you tried something new?

In Canada is the May long weekend so lots of people are heading home from their first summer adventure. People who work today either get double time and a half OR time and a half and a day off in lieu. You can see why many employers would rather just have everyone take the day off…that's a lot of extra wages. When I had few vacation days (the first year of work), I would chose the day in lieu.

Which would you choose and how would you spend it?

Howdy, howdy!

I was talking to a neighbour the other day and the topic turned to current events. We agreed we are very lucky to be in Canada. She was a little concerned about immigrants/refugees and asked if I thought there were a lot of bad people getting in. I am not. Immigrants complain about how long the vetting takes to get into Canada which, to me means they are doing as thorough a job as possible; if I wanted to be a criminal, I would do it where I could get lost in a crowd rather than scrutinized. I also said, think of how hard it is to move across town – what strong motivation people must have to move to Canada which isn’t close to anywhere warm and is so different than where a lot of people are coming from. We should be kind and helpful as they are far from home.

It reminded me of a twitter thread I was reading where someone gave 2 arguments for accepting diversity. One is we’re all very similar, just different through experiences and the other is we’re all different and that difference makes us special and worthy (maybe poor phrasing on my part there). I find the first way of thinking far more compelling – which way do you think?

Hello fellow humans.

I watched a video about the 70s and the era of colour and patterns that were popular in that time, vibrant earth tones, large floral and decorative clothing for all. My teen years were spent in a house with red carpet, a big brick fireplace and wood panelling and I wore paisley hot pants 🙂 Smoking and drinking were everywhere, adults had titles and no swearing! How times have changed. We talk a lot about changing tech but there have been wider changes – no one expects China and cutlery for inflight food service (or even in flight food service in many cases) or gifts from a bank for opening an account.

What is something common from growing up that you just don't see anymore?

Hi, how are ya?

The other day we were programming the garage door opener into the Cayenne when I realized you can save 3 doors; I had saved 1 for and used a key chain for the occasional use of the other door🙄 I find I often do that…only finding out enough about a tool to use it the way I want in the moment without thinking about expanded use.

Is there something you’ve used for ages only to find out it had an additional use that you would have used.

How are you these days? It’s a new hosting week so expect the unexpected🙂 If you are #NewHere; welcome! Hope you'll join in; take part in the daily thread topic, continue the topic from yesterday, give a brief update or send a wave. Let's jump in.

The last gym class I took was at Tech school and focused on trying different activities that we would continue as we age. I found out I didn’t like running, weight room workouts, and most solitary indoor workouts. I do like trying new things though and I’m pretty good at laughing at myself over mistakes. For those less used to making mistakes, there's YouTube. This instructor has a bunch of really beginner exercise videos which can get people into moving when they're not used to it.

Are there activities you would do if you could get somewhat good at them before being around other people?

Welcome to #Checkin for Thursday, April 5, 2022!

Hello, hello, hello...it's my turn again? Hurray! Well, there are a few significant celebrations throughout the world today. Cinco de Maya has somehow morphed into a party about freedom and liberty. But why not celebrate worthy ideals with pinatas, food, dance and music?

Today as well, Children's Day is celebrated, mainly in Japan and Korea though you'll see carp flown in many other countries. This is a day set aside to respect children's personalities and to celebrate their happiness. The colourful carp streamers (koinobori) are hung outside homes in the hope that children will grow up strong and successful. The carp as a symbol of vitality is also said to date to China, to the myth of the carp who swims upstream through a mighty river and becomes a dragon.

While many people follow certain May traditions, from erecting up (and stealing others) maypoles to activities like riding a bike together in a group and of course drinking beer! Or, as "normally" in Berlin, participating in riots…or demonstrations
My parents meet with another couple and their little dog and will go for a walk with Justus and having coffee afterwards.
