Welcome to #CheckIn for Friday, September 3rd

I received a CD from a long-time friend as an early birthday gift. It’s not the sort of music I normally buy for myself, by an artist that’s tolerable, but not one I was interested in following. After a first listen I’ve found that it’s very different from the songs from the artist that I’ve heard on the radio, and I really like it.

Now, I like a lot of different genres of music from around the globe. I have over eighty days of digitized music I’ve accumulated over the years that I play on random selection in iTunes. While I have some current favorites, Afro pop bands such as Newen Afrobeat, Funk/Jazz/Rock fusion bands like Snarky Puppy, I often rely on a few artists that I like for very specific reasons, like Djivan Gasparyan, Grant Greene, and Peter Bolland.

What sort of music do you like? Do you have a favorite band, artist, or performer that you prefer, and if so, why do you like them? No judgement, and none allowed. A lot of music I love many people can’t stand, so be gentle with one another other, and keep it light.

Lucky me, I just returned from an outdoor meal with friends. While enjoying apres meal tea, a family of friendly stellar jays came by to feast on raw peanuts my friends had for them. This bird was THIS close to me (I wasn't using the zoom function.)

Animals with jobs is an interest of mine. We who live with animals know what a vital role they play in our lives but aren't those animals trained to perform services far better than what we humans can do simply amazing? Do share accounts of them you've encountered in real life or via news. Or if none come to mind do provide updates on your favourite animals! (Feel free to do both.)

A draw at many of the covid vaccination clinics in our region is therapy dogs who help alleviate the anxiety of those people who have needle phobias. Apparently, they are very effective, but they also make the clinics joyful places for those who visit or work there.

While the food's beginning is ambiguous (did it originate in Germany or in the US?) is there any region in the world where hamburgers are not ubiquitous?

Welcome to #Checkin for Wednesday 25, 2021!

Good morning/evening/afternoon and welcome to today's #checkin. Today is my last day for this week as #checkin host. Tomorrow @su ann lim will take over! I'm a bit late today, cause we had a busy day at work with a team meeting and planning the next months together. We started with a Mettfrühstück (Mett, aka ground/raw pork meat) and are now finishing the day with a barbecue. Our office is at the 7th floor and we have a nice view over the city of Paderborn. While the 7th floor is not that high, I am usually afraid of heights when I visited lighthouses or other high places

For work, I did some reading on Smart Home devices and technologies and was wondering how “smart” your house/apartment already is?
Some may only have a Smart TV, but others have probably also an Alexa or light control or smart thermostats or a CCTV or whatever device or daget.

Good morning/afternoon/evening. I was just checking my bank account when I saw an ad for a tooth fairy bank account where you will get 2€ from the bank per lost milk-tooth. I wondered about the tradition of the tooth fairy, and coincidentally, it turns out that today is National Tooth Fairy Day. Apparently the tradition started in the US, but is originated in medieval European superstitions. And in France or Spain, it's apparently the tooth mouse which is responsible for your teeth.

**Do you observe the "tooth fairy" or similar myths? Did the tooth fairy or mouse come in your childhood?
When I was a kid, there was nothing special. And my mom didn't even know until today about the tradition.

Good morning/evening/afternoon and welcome to today's #checkin! This evening I will visit my friend who had a birthday. I will ride by bike (bicycle). Fortunately, there is a good bike lane I can use. Before it was converted to a bike lane, it was a railway track. Many tracks that were deemed to costly were dismantled and converted into bike lanes here. On the countryside bike lanes are usually not a problem, but in big cities like Berlin it's deadly dangerous to ride a bike. There have been so many deadly accidents where truck drivers turning right ran over.

In Germany, the story about how Frederick the Great was responsible for bestowing “potato happiness” on his subjects is well known. King of Prussia form 1740 to 1772, he is still referred to as “Alte Fritz” (Old Fritz) to this day. It is said that he ordered soldiers to guard a field of field of potatoes, ostensibly to protect this highly precious crop. Their curiosity aroused, the local farmers, who had up till then showed no interest in cultivating potatoes, stole some of them and started growing them themselves – or so the story goes

My week has come to an end again. It’s kind of nice for it to end on a Wednesday.

Many of us are resuming work schedules that my include more onsite requirements. I’ve worked some different schedules that include 10 hour shifts with 2 on , 1 off (Wednesday), 2 on and 2 off. I’ve also worked 8 hours schedules with rotating weekends and, for that last 20 years of working, 5 on , 2 off 7-3.

If I could, I would choose the 10 hour shift schedule that runs 7-5:00 with routine tasks like safety focused inspections, maintenance first thing in the morning, administrative meetings after 10 a.m. and responsive action after lunch. What kind of schedule would you choose? (35 – 40 hr work week, no OT, 30 minute lunch included)

There's something about being the backdrop for a story that makes a location more exotic than it really is. I read a lot of mysteries/crime stories that take place in Florida. There's a pretty good range of protagonist and it seems like a great canvas for justice…totally different than what is reported in the news. I’ve read stories that take place in Saskatchewan, which is ot exotic to me, and it made me feel like I might be missing something. I have a 4:30 a.m. pickup to get to the airport so sleep (and beds) is very much on my mind. I have many young childhood memories; I remember living In Nova Scotia even though we left there when I was around 4. We lived in PMQs that had a long set of stairs up to the bedrooms where I slept on a double bed with lots of pillows after my brother came along to use the crib. Next memory is of bunk beds when I was 5-ish.

What is the first bed you remember sleeping in? How long did you sleep in it?

Blood…everyone has it, lots of people don't like to be reminded of it. I used to work in health care giving injections and taking blood. First question we asked was if people fainted out were uncomfortable around needles. Unfortunately if they were, we'd take them to another room so they could lie down before we started, thinking now I’d have recliners for all patients to be more discreet. But I digress.

Even though I took blood and have helped bleeding people, I don't particularly enjoy seeing mine escape. I turn away at needles. I find people who give shots are better at being distracting that those taking samples for tests. Do needles bother you?
