Hello fellow humans.

Personal cheques are back baby! I’m old enough to remember when businesses surcharged for using credit cards (or gave a discount for cash or debit cards). Now that I’m paying small businesses for services I’m running up against a 3.5% surcharge if I charge over a certain amount – usually $2-4K. I’m sure some of them will forgive the credit card use charge but those charges can really cut into their bottom line so I understand them being passed on. They will take an e-transfer but I hesitate to set a high enough limit to pay for renos so cheques it is. I got the free ugly cheques from the bank and they work just fine.

Telus just made the news for saying their highly profitable company is going to start surcharging people who set up automatic payments using credit cards. Scoundrels! Have you found more places giving discounts to cash, debit or e-transfer?

Teeth and dentists are a big deal and not just because nice teeth are attractive (to me). Between fluoridation of municipal water and a more general push towards tooth care, people are keeping their teeth much longer. I met Fred’s parents when they were in their 40s and they didn’t have their teeth at that age. My parents started getting false teeth in their 30s. We, at circling 60, have mouths full of teeth with fillings or crowns but have no bridges or anchored false teeth.

How are your teeth? Do you have a good dentist? We’ve been with our dentist for 20 years now and he’s a dentistry tech geek. He does pain free fillings without freezing and loves to answer questions.

New computer…not for me😥😀☹️We finally decided to upgrade Fred from a 2005ish desktop to a laptop as an energy-saving effort. We've upgraded the desktop guts a few times but we're retiring it while it still works. The new computer will be nice to because it can be used at the work table in his project room as well as at his desk. I was going to hand me down mine but he wanted more RAM for 3-d print designs.

While he was loading programs he was getting frustrated by the mouse jumping around. I mentioned that happened to me and he was probably brushing the mouse pad. He said he’d just turn off the touchpad. After all this time, I didn’t know you could do that so now I've set it so if there is a mouse connected the touchpad is disabled!

Time for another tip thread - have you learned something recently that you wish you knew sooner?

Hello, hello. How are you today? Today's Heroes Day. Who's someone who comes to mind when you think of a "hero"? What did he or she do to earn that respect in your eyes? Please don't hesitate to comment about heroes (not just one) or if you can't think of any right now what else is in your mind? One of the enjoyable aspects of #Checkin posts is that many discussions can take place on a single day's thread. 😂

As for heroes, for me, 6 days ago at the beach a short walk from here, 19-year-old off-duty lifeguard Emma Baecker saved a man's life. He was swimming after the scheduled hours lifeguards are on duty and was observed behaving awkwardly in the water. Several people assisted but the teenage life guard, who was teaching paddle board lessons nearby, took charge and saved the man's life. It so happened, that a friend and I happened to be out for an evening stroll right then and saw the young man being rushed to a waiting ambulance.

This festival takes place on the day there's a full moon in August. Sometimes you can see the bees and butterflies being busy in the flowers here in the garden. I am always fascinated by animals and there are new still surprises and new discoveries.
Today I read about the oldest tortoise called Jonathan, around 190 years old, and living on the island St Helena.

Good morning/afternoon/evening and welcome to today's #checkin. In several parts of Germany there was heavy rainfall, and especially in parts of Bavaria but also in NRW there were flooding as well. And in Dortmund, the railway signal box apparently also was affected by water coming inside and now there's chaos again at the train station. Anyway, been listening to music, watching the live stream of the Summerbreeze festival for some good music. At least much better music than those mainstream pop stuff in the radio.

Do you listen to the radio? A favorite radio station or CD/Spotify/whatever? I prefer mp3/CDs in the car.

Welcome to #CheckIn for Wednesday, August 17

It’s my last day already and @Christoph S is up next! Time for me to start thinking of new topics but first…

It’s a travel day again! We’re visiting the in-laws, then my family and finally stopping to kayak in the BC interior. This will likely be our last trip to the coast for this year. I remember when I only had 2 weeks of holidays. We would spend long weekends with the in-laws then the 2 week block with my family on the coast. As I got more vacation time, we started traveling - no point in hanging around with family too much😉

There's a fine line between short stays and moving around too often to settle. I find the perfect length of time to stay with family is 4 to 5 days but when we rent a home near a beach, I can lounge for a week.

We even used to move every couple of years until we built this house and we would have moved from here but we were priced out of the market we wanted to enter. Eh Bien. It's not hard to stay in a home that suits us. Just too bad it's so far from a beach. Thankfully we are close to an airport.

Are you a wanderer or have you put down roots? How long do you like to be away from home?

Grab your beverage preference (pixel or not) and enjoy the space. I try to keep things light but this is your thread so … there’s always an element of randomness. Sometimes it changes course and sometimes ideas are more nuanced.

Hey, hey, it's Monday!

I’ve found fitness classes to be the best way for me to keep all my muscles moving – especially the ones I don’t feel like working. I need the motivation and guidance of a leader. When I first started in the 80s I did Jane Fonda’s workout on a record – can you imagine trying to do a move you can’t see!?! Also, back in the day, it was about feeling the burn. How times have changed. Instructors admit everyone is different and demonstrate different options for varying mobility levels and of course, we have video.

How do you motivate yourself to do things you need to do but aren’t feeling it? OR what’s your go-to avoidance activity (mine is house cleaning making the avoidance question which task do I dislike the least)
