New Details Reported on Pete Hegseth's Sexual Assault History, Ethics Violations

The New Yorker magazine's Jane Mayer has revealed Trump's pick for
defense secretary, Pete Hegseth, was forced out of leadership roles at
two veterans organizations for misusing funds, sexually harassing women
and being repeatedly drunk on the job. According to a whistleblower
report, Hegseth once had to be restrained from joining dancers on the
stage of a strip club. In another incident, Hegseth drunkenly chanted
"Kill All Muslims! Kill All Muslims!" at a bar in 2015.

Meanwhile, The New York Times reports Hegseth's own mother once accused
him of mistreating women. In 2018, Penelope Hegseth wrote him an email
that read in part, "On behalf of all the women (and I know it's many)
you have abused in some way, I say … get some help and take an honest
look at yourself." The email was sent a year after a woman accused
Hegseth of raping her at a California hotel.

"A Catastrophe": Austria's Nazi-Created Freedom Party Wins Parliamentary Election

In Austria, the far-right Freedom Party won this weekend's parliamentary
election, edging out the ruling conservatives and sending shockwaves
throughout Europe. But it's unclear if the Freedom Party will be able to
form a governing coalition, as all of its rivals have ruled out
collaboration. Party leader Herbert Kickl ran on a nationalist platform,
pledging to restrict asylum and migration and expel non-EU citizens. The
Freedom Party was founded in the wake of World War II by former Nazis.
On Sunday, protesters gathered outside the Parliament building in Vienna
chanting, "Nazis, get out of Parliament."

Johanna Franz: "That means social cuts for Austria. That means lower
salaries. That means a catastrophe, especially for migrants and for the
women who are demonstrating in favor of abortion again. We started
demonstrating 40 years ago, and I can't do it anymore."

Generally, performing or receiving an abortion is still considered a criminal offence.

Abortion in Liechtenstein, which borders Austria, remains illegal and punishable by law. Some women who choose to terminate an unwanted pregnancy cross the border into Austria to undergo the procedure.

Once again, Europe surprises me. Just a few years ago I discovered that women couldn't vote in Switzerland until 1972!

Calls Mount for U.S. to Investigate, Hold Israel Accountable for Killing Ayşenur Ezgi Eygi

The body of Ayşenur Ezgi Eygi, the 26-year-old Turkish American activist
who was killed by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank, has arrived
in Turkey ahead of her funeral. On Thursday, Ayşenur's father, Mehmet
Suat Eygi, praised Turkey for investigating the killing and called on
the U.S. to do the same.

Mehmet Suat Eygi: "America is a different country. When there is
injustice or torment toward its citizens or they are killed in any
country in the world, it lands on that country like the eagle on its
emblem. But when the subject is Israel, there is more of an effort to
dodge it. But I want to believe that people will listen to their
conscience."

Earlier this week, The Washington Post published an investigation
corroborating eyewitness accounts that the protests Ayşenur Ezgi Eygi
had been taking part in were already over when Israeli soldiers opened
fire and killed her.

Meanwhile, three top Democrats from Ayşenur's home state of Washington -
Senators Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray and Congressmember Pramila
Jayapal - called on the Biden administration to investigate her killing.
On Wednesday, hundreds of people gathered at a Seattle beach for a vigil
honoring the recent University of Washington graduate.

TX Appeals Court to Review Acquittal of Black Mother Who Was Sentenced to Prison for Trying to Vote

The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals will review the case of Crystal
Mason, a Black mother who was sentenced to five years in prison for
attempting to cast a provisional ballot in the 2016 election when she
was ineligible to vote. At the time, Mason was on supervised release for
a tax felony and was unaware that this barred her from casting a ballot.
Her ballot was never actually counted. Mason's conviction was already
overturned, and she was acquitted earlier this year, but Tarrant
County's conservative district attorney appealed the decision. Crystal
Mason appeared on Democracy Now! in 2018.

Amy Goodman: "Crystal, do you ever plan to vote again?"

Crystal Mason: "I do. I do. And that's what I'm encouraging my kids, to
get out there so we can make a difference right now. I do. I just feel
right now that the system failed me. You get out, you rehabilitate
yourself, you get a good job, you go to school, you graduate from
school, you're doing everything right - so, why would I go and vote, to
go back to prison?"

Israel and Hezbollah Continue Cross-Border Fighting Amid Fears of a Broader Conflict

Israel and Hezbollah continued to exchange cross-border fire Wednesday,
with Israel targeting multiple areas across southern Lebanon and
Hezbollah blasting over 50 rockets and a swarm of drones in the
Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. Israel also killed a senior member of
Palestine's Fatah movement in the southern Lebanese city of Sidon,
claiming Khalil al-Maqdah has orchestrated attacks on Israeli forces in
the West Bank. The Fatah party accused Israel of seeking to "ignite a
regional war."
Meanwhile, President Biden spoke to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu Wednesday, and a second U.S. aircraft carrier, the USS Abraham
Lincoln, arrived in the Middle East Wednesday as the U.S. bolsters
forces in the region.

New Report Details Israel's Pattern of Kidnapping, Torturing and Humiliating Gazan Children

A new report from Defense for Children International Palestine says
Israeli forces are detaining and torturing Palestinian children in Gaza,
using children as human shields and "intentionally and systematically"
separating children from their families. The report includes testimony
of children survivors, including the case of many boys who were forced
to strip naked and walk with their hands bound in front of Israeli tanks
and bulldozers. The children were also beaten, denied water and
threatened with dogs. Sixteen-year-old Abdulmunim, who was abducted with
his younger brother Ali, said he was barely able to move after Israeli
forces blindfolded them, tied them up and beat them with rifles before
leaving them in the cold.
