"This section, just 2% of the bird #genome, convinced #scientists that most #birds could be grouped into two major categories, with #flamingos and #doves as evolutionary cousins. The more accurate family tree identifies four main groups and identifies flamingos and doves as more distantly related."

Prior to 1986, Susumu Ohno had already led an interesting career as a geneticist, highlighted by his theory on the mechanism governing the increase in #gene and #genome complexity and the origin of new genes throughout evolution, which was based on the repetition of gene fragments as well as genes and genomes and the subsequent differentiation of certain copies from the original ones.

His observations that repetition and redundancy were frequent in the genes and genomes of living beings as different patterns are in #music were precisely what led Doctor Ohno to think of the possibility of “listening” to the #musical #sounds of genes. It was at that point that Midori Aoyama provided her musical #knowledge.

Comparative genomics of mortal and #immortal cnidarians unveils novel keys behind rejuvenation

Source: https://www.pnas.org/doi/full/10.1073/pnas.2118763119

Further, we compare a set of almost 1,000 #genes related to aging and #DNA #repair between both Turritopsis and other cnidarians and present a stage-specific transcriptome of #life cycle reversal process of T. dohrnii. Altogether, these results unveil key molecular mechanisms behind rejuvenation of T. dohrnii.

There has been criticism in the face of the World Health Organization's (#WHO) reports on "global governance" of #human #genome editing. Rightfully so. The WHO says that the reports "provide advice and recommendations on appropriate institutional, national, regional and global governance mechanisms for human genome editing". Dr David King said of the reports: “This is an abdication of the WHO’s responsibility. It is obvious that the only practical solution to the risks of rogue scientists and profit-minded IVF clinics starting a new free market eugenics is a comprehensive global ban treaty. That is why over 70 countries have already effectively banned it. The mealy-mouthed call for ‘governance’ is a technocratic strategy, which we have already seen from other scientific establishment bodies, for eventual normalisation of human genetic engineering.” Stuart A. Newman, PhD, Professor of Cell Biology and Anatomy at New York Medical College, commented, "Leaving the door open to GM humans, as WHO does in these reports, flies in the face of science that demonstrates that embryos cannot be reliably engineered. Every attempt to do so, now or in the future, will be an uncontrolled experiment on a prospective person. There are justified uses of genetic modification to cure diseases in desperately ill patients. CRISPR-modified babies, however, is an unethical technology."
There should be a global #ban, not global governance.

#China’s #gene giant harvests data from millions of #women

Source: https://www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/health-china-bgi-dna/

U.S. #government advisors warned in March that a vast bank of genomic data that the company, #BGI Group, is amassing and analyzing with artificial #intelligence could give China a path to economic and #military advantage. As #science pinpoints new links between genes and human traits, access to the biggest, most diverse set of human genomes is a strategic edge. The #technology could propel China to dominate global pharmaceuticals, and also potentially lead to genetically enhanced soldiers, or engineered pathogens to target the U.S. population or #food supply, the advisors said.

What is the #problem? That China violates data #privacy or that the #data was not stolen by an U.S. company?
