Gunhild Carling and her Speakeasy (from a secret location somewhere in NorCal)

with Viggo, Luke, Nathan and Johan (2024)

Johan Blomé on banjo, Luke Curly on tuba, Viggo Carling-Blomé on drums, Nathan Tokunaga on sax and clarinet, and Gunhild Carling on trombone, trumpet, vocals, and theremin. Yes, theremin.

This was streamed live yesterday. She's back in the USA until April 22 (when she goes to Spain), and she's about to appear at a festival in New Orleans. Also, news of a new album by Idun Carling.

China Boy

Gunhild Carling, Johan Blomé, their children Idun and Viggo, Nanna Carling, and others (2022)

This was posted on February 26, 2014, but the performance was on December 30, 2022. It was at Keystone Korner in Baltimore. As usual, Nanna was having the most fun. (She's one of the daughters of Gunhild's older brother Max Carling.) Viggo does a great job on drums. Unfortunately, I don't know who that is on clarinet. Whoever it is, he's great!

China Boy is a hot jazz standard.

Gunhild Carling and her Speakeasy (from a secret location somewhere in NorCal)

with Clint Baker, Riley Baker, Nathan Tokunaga, Viggo Carling Blomé , and Neil Fontano (2024)

This was live-streamed yesterday morning. Looks like Idun has gone back to UC Irvine. Nathan Tokunaga again, this time with his teacher, Clint Baker. The kid is so good! Neil Fontano, BTW, is also a great drummer.

Great performance of "Clarinet Marmalade" at 20:15. Incidentally, there's a great record of this by Wild Bill Davison and his Commodores. I'm sure I posted it some time in the past.

Gunhild Carling and her Speakeasy

from a secret location somewhere in NorCal, livestreamed Feb. 18, 2024

Excellent work from Nathan Tokunaga on clarinet and sax! This guy's only 17. We need to watch for this name in the future.

This video is Gunhild's usual mix of her own compositions, New Orleans jazz from the 1920s, and a little other jazz not so hot. The second song is "Sister Kate" ("I Wish that I Could Shimmy Like my Sister Kate"), followed by Idun Carling singing "Meet Me Where They Play the Blues."

Carling Family Jazz Odyssey (album)

Carling Family (2024)

I assume it's 2024.

Songs:
1. King porter stomp
2. Black bottom stomp
3. Cannon ball blues
4. The chant
5. Buddy bolden’s blues
6. Save it pretty mama
7. ALAMEDA
8. I’LL BE A FRIEND WITH PLEASURE
9. HOOSIER SWEETHEART
10. THE JAZZ RECORDER
11. STARDUST

I'm going to assume that the people pictured are the musicians on the album. I'm also going to assume I can correctly recognize them. So Gunhild lying on the piano. Gerd (gunhild's sister) playing the piano. Viggo (Gunhild's son) on the banjo (because he's blonde and young). Aina (Gunhild's mother), also on banjo. Idun (Gunhild's daughter) on trombone. Max (Gunhild's older brother) on clarinet. Ulf (Gunhild's younger brother) on drums. I suspect Gunhild drew the album cover.

At the Jazz Band Ball

Carling's Darlings (2020, before Idun's birthday in August)

Look how young the kids look! This was made here in Northern California. If I've figured this out correctly, the Carlings came to NorCal in early 2020. They now split their time between touring the USA and Europe (though Idun, now 18, is apparently apparently a now a student at some university in SoCal). I suspect they've lived in Cupertino, perhaps on Miller Avenue. This is based on the titles of songs Gunhild has written ("Down on Miller Avenue" and "Cupertino Ragtime").

Gunhild Carling cornet
Pritish Budhrani age 16 clarinet
Idun Carling age 14 trombone
Viggo Carling age 12 drums
Manav Budhrani age 12 banjo
Cougar Karson age 15 euphonium
Johan Blomé (Gunhild's husband) guitar

Bagpipe Swing

with Gunhild Carling in Central Park in NYC

I'm afraid I don't recognize the tune here. This was too remarkable to pass up. Swing on pipes. This is not piob mhor (Scottish great pipes), but, I suppose, some sort of Swedish bagpipes. Her Wikipedia page says she started playing pipes at a young age.

Jazz Me Blues

Gunhild, Nanna, Petronella, and Linnea Carling (in Italy)

OMG! I just discovered Gunhild (seen here on trumpet) yesterday. She's amazing. She's Swedish, and, apparently, better known as a trombone player. She came here to Northern California just in time for the pandemic. Not the best time to start a career in a new country.

"Jazz Me Blues" is a jot music standard. I posted a record of it from 1945 by Wild Bill Davison and his Commodores, This tune was written by Tom Delaney in 1920. All the great tunes come from the 1920s.
