All #UK #honey tested in #EU fraud investigation fails authenticity test

Adulteration of honey with cheap sugar syrup has been exposed in a new investigation by the European Commission, which found 46% of sampled products were suspected to be fraudulent. Ten honey samples from the UK all failed the tests. They may have been blended or packaged in Britain, but the honey probably originated overseas.

This is not the first time tests have suggested that UK shoppers may be being cheated on their honey, though supermarkets say they regularly test honey and audit supply lines.

The government said this weekend that it was investigating the results, but there was no risk to food safety. Officials say no single test can establish honey’s authenticity and research is continuing.

The EU’s anti-fraud office (Olaf) said: “Such practices defraud consumers and put honest producers in jeopardy as they face unfair competition from operators who can slash prices thanks to illicit, cheap ingredients.”

The action was led by the European Commission’s directorate general for health and food safety, collaborating with the 18 countries that are part of the EU food fraud network (which no longer includes the UK since Brexit). It was also supported by the Joint Research Centre (JRC), the commission’s science and knowledge service, and Olaf.

Investigators tested 320 samples and found 147 (46%) were suspicious, where “at least one marker of extraneous sugar sources was detected”.

Bear Gets Totally High After Binging On Psychedelic Honey - The Dodo

The honey is produced by bees who collect pollen from specific flowers in the rhododendron family which are native to the region. For thousands of years, people have been harvesting “mad honey” for both its sweetness and drug-like effects.

In smaller doses, it can create feelings of euphoria and even cause hallucinations. It is possible, however, to eat too much “mad honey.” And, from the looks of it, this bear did just that.

Must have been hell of a trip!

Telling the #Bees is an old #tradition in England and elsewhere in Europe. #Beekeepers would inform their hives of important events in their family - births, deaths, marriages. It was believed that if the bees were not told, they might leave the hive or stop making #honey, or simply sting people and die.

Nice to see the tradition is being upheld, as the royal beekeeper has informed the Queen's bees that the #Queen has died and #King Charles is their new boss. Sorry I could only find coverage of this in the Daily Mail.

The royal beekeeper - in an arcane tradition thought to date back centuries - has informed the hives kept in the grounds of Buckingham Palace and Clarence House of the Queen’s death.

And the bees have also been told, in hushed tones, that their new master is now King Charles III.

The official Palace beekeeper, John Chapple, 79, told MailOnline how he travelled to Buckingham Palace and Clarence House on Friday following news of The Queen’s death to carry out the superstitious ritual.

He placed black ribbons tied into bows on the hives, home to tens of thousands of bees, before informing them that their mistress had died and that a new master would be in charge from now on.

He then urged the bees to be good to their new master - himself once famed for talking to plants.

The strange ritual is underpinned by an old superstition that not to tell them of a change of owner would lead to the bees not producing honey, leaving the hive or even dying.
