The making of the Equinox Grillmeister Barbecue app
This was an app that probably impressed me the most many years back, and the one app that I really missed when I moved from an iPhone to an Android phone (although it technically could have run on an Android phone). Tragically it seems like it is no longer available for download, but nevertheless, it is an interesting story about all the effort that went into making it.
To make a dream a reality, it’s all about ideas, visions and emotions. ‘Grillmeister’ is the result of one such dream. Smoke, fire and sizzling steaks – Till Schadde loves a good barbecue. As a passionate Grill-meister, he simply had to have a barbecue for his iPhone. But making a dream come true isn’t always as easy as it sounds – especially when your Barbecue is made in Munich and you have to meet the high standards of fussy German engineers.
The idea was simple: the app should basically turn your iPhone into a barbecue. But with each new build and iteration, Till and the team added new ideas and details to the app, building on the original idea. The final version of ‘Grillmeister’ gives you the full experience of grilling in your backyard on the iPhone.

The Inside Story Of iBeer, The Underdog iPhone Beer App That Made Millions
The work of a down-and-out magician, nothing was bigger during the App Store’s first year of existence. But like so many overnight successes, iBeer got drunk on money and power and last call arrived far too soon.
I remember buying this app for the same reasons as everyone else, before the Android phone was even available. For some reason, when I switched to Android, I really missed this app as well as the iOS Barbecue app (will have a separate post on that story). Similar beer apps made it to Android fairly soon, but the Barbecue app never did.

This is What a Standalone Apple Camera Might Look Like
Concept designer Antonio De Rosa of ADR Studio has created what he believes is a route Apple might take if it were to design a standalone camera.
The fictional camera is called the "Apple ProCam," and De Rosa tells PetaPixel that his design isn't based on leaks or rumors because those don't interest him. Instead, he says he likes to explore how Apple's Technology Language could be applied to different objects.
"Apple has demonstrated with Apple Silicon that they gained the 'Midas Touch' lately and they are potentially able to outcome the problems in any market and I think that photography (also with AR/VR) and mobility, it’s something they will innovate on really soon," he says.
What an Apple Camera Might Feature
His design features 8K video capture capability, what he calls an "innovative" lens design thanks to what would be Apple's own proprietary mount, Siri on-board, a touch and tiltable rear display, a "Magic Wheel" touchable command dial, and inkless-printing built-in, all powered by its M1 chip.
The built-in printing system would bridge digital and analog and allow for immediate enjoyment of photos taken with the ProCam.
"I had an experience designing the Polaroid Socialmatic a few years ago and I always thought the printed photography is not only a nostalgic operation," he says. "Pictures resonate when you print them and to have a device that merges high-level optics and tech with a fast printing system could be something cool."
The shutter button is located on the front of the camera while the main command dial actually features a tiny circular touchable display. In use, it would show different camera modes but would also function as a way to activate Siri.
The idea that the camera would use a proprietary mount for its lenses, as well as printer packs for the photos, actually does sound like something Apple would do in order to support what would very likely be a closed system (which is typical for Apple products). The camera would also serve as the core of many accessories that both Apple and third parties could support, just as is the case with the iPhone.
A Unique Lens and Sensor System
De Rosa shows two possible designs for the lens and sensor system. One is a much larger take on Apple's current triple-camera rear system currently found on its smartphones, while the other is more akin to what is found on all other interchangeable lens cameras currently on the market. His design seems to indicate that these two front plates would be interchangeable, but it doesn't seem particularly practical given the need for a different sensor arrangement for each.
Based in History, but Probably Never to Be
Apple has dabbled in standalone photography equipment in the past. As noted by Cult of Mac, Apple actually worked with Fujifilm to produce the QuickTake 100 back in 1994. The 0.3-megapixel camera was a commercial flop and Apple hasn't revisited the standalone camera market since making it very unlikely that Apple would go down this route since it already makes a camera it considers a professional shooter (it's called the iPhone).

South Africans can trade in their old iPhones for new devices and this is how much you can get
Owners of older iPhones can trade in their device when buying an iPhone 13 to get significant discounts — up to R15,000 for the iPhone 12 Pro Max. iPhone owners can also trade in their devices for store credit if they are not ready to pull the trigger on an iPhone 13 purchase.
Maybe not the absolute highest price you’ll get, but a lot safer than using Facebook Marketplace, that’s for sure.

Women force change at Indian iPhone plant, sick from bad food, crowded dorms
For women who assembled iPhones at a Foxconn plant in southern India, crowded dorms without flush toilets and food sometimes crawling with worms were problems to be endured for the paycheck. But when tainted food sickened over 250 of the workers their anger boiled over, culminating in a rare protest that shut down a plant where 17,000 had been working.

#JBIG2 doesn't have scripting capabilities, but when combined with a #vulnerability, it does have the ability to emulate circuits of arbitrary logic gates operating on arbitrary #memory. So why not just use that to build your own #computer architecture and script that!? That's exactly what this exploit does. Using over 70,000 segment commands defining logical bit operations, they define a small computer architecture with features such as registers and a full 64-bit adder and comparator which they use to search memory and perform arithmetic operations. It's not as fast as #Javascript, but it's fundamentally computationally equivalent.

Nebo Night Sky
I thought I'd give the NightCap app a go since I paid for it a few weeks ago.
I didn't bring my camera gear to Wales for the weekend as the forecast was for cloudy skies for the duration.
It's not going to win any awards but I managed to capture this skyscape with four asterisms and a galaxy.
Moving clockwise from the top left is Cassiopeia,Pegasus, Triangulum and Perseus.
The fuzzy dot just left of the middle is Andromeda.
You can click to expand the image, and I can overlay it with red lines to show the constellations/asterisms if you'd like.
It was too cold to hang about for too long and clouds stopped play any way.

NO. NUNCA.
Aquí me quedo.
Apple to Alert iPhone Users of 'State-Sponsored Attackers'
Apple has announced plans to notify users when they are suspected of having been hacked by “state-sponsored” threat actors. The move appears to have been at least partially inspired by recent hacking controversies involving Israeli spyware maker NSO Group, which sells surveillance gear to governments around the world and has repeatedly been tied to surreptitious spying incidents involving iPhone users.

This shouldn't be news but... Apple now lets you repair your own iPhone
Following heavy criticism regarding anti-repair practices on the iPhone 13 lineup, Apple has just announced its Self Service Repair program. The company shared earlier that it wouldn’t be disabling Face ID after third-party screen repairs, after online outrage. The Cupertino giant is now taking an unexpected step further and making repairs easily accessible to individuals.
In a newsroom post, Apple has stated that iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 users will be able to order genuine spare parts and tools to repair their own iPhones. The move is unprecedented by Apple, but it’s most definitely a welcome one that will help dodge anti-trust lawsuits.
Clearly, without lawsuits and pressure groups, this would never have changed. Whilst I really love some of what Apple does (very long software update cycles, the best health smartwatch, etc) there is also a lot I really dislike (a crippled Shortcuts app, iCloud web apps that lack features, Photos is dismal compared to Google Photos, etc). So this is yet another incremental improvement (like widgets, 3rd party keyboards and browsers, copy-and-paste, etc that eventually arrived).
