There is something fundamentally wrong about landlords asking for money to pay off a mortgage. That means they don't actually own the property and so any rental payment towards the mortgage by a tenant must be seen in law as part payment of the mortgage and hence the tenant earns the a fraction of the property. I'm not an economist nor a lawmaker and so I don't know what the technical issues are but the morality of it is surely better than the current situation.
