Wesgro creates the Cape Karoo region in Roblox, partnering with BP & Shell to win the hearts of young road-trippers in South Africa

The first thought I had was, this had to do with PR for fracking, but no, it is a genuine promotion of tourism in an innovative way that appeals to the youth. Kudos to Wesgro for such an innovative idea that seems very well executed. It certainly taps into a very current trend around gaming with locations. The Karoo has long been a favourite location for me to take bike rides to. I once rode out there and spend an hour or just reading a book, with a wonderful view in front of, and not a single solitary human or even car in sight.

The game Starlight Adventures In The Cape Karoo aims to drive tourism across the region, highlighting lesser-known but exciting family destinations where tourism is critical to the local economy.

Wesgro is the first tourism promotion agency in the world to use Roblox in its marketing campaigns, with today’s launch being the second game it has released on the platform.

The game includes a digital clone of Prince Albert, a small town with only 7000 people, that has been transformed into a playable experience.

In researching the game, Wesgro consulted with local tour guides and cultural experts – using 3D scans of landmarks and objects to create an accurate representation of the town.

With a map spanning four square kilometres, the game is one of the largest on Roblox.

Additionally, for the first time in a game, the history and culture of the Khoisan people, the world’s oldest tribe, is featured.

Even the things that voice assistants and #AR glasses already do well, phones do better. #Voice dictation works impressively well on both #Android and #iOS, and #Google’s Live View in Maps is already a pretty good augmented-reality #navigation tool. You’ll get better and more fun #photos out of #Snapchat on your phone than you will with Spectacles. Most of the promise of the #metaverse is already taking place in #Fortnite and #Roblox.

"Every frame of animation was rendered in Roblox Studio, at a 20x slowdown. Then sped up in Adobe Premiere. The 5 instruments were all coded from scratch in Lua, helped by the representation of some Desmos graphs. Every arc primitive or circular feature was made using custom Lua code. Also from scratch was the system to play overlapping animations & without imprecision errors. In 2021 I developed a custom plugin and GUI for Roblox Studio to create the camera keyframes. I developed a rough system for inserting any custom MIDI file into the model."

Roblox, explained - Up to 42 million daily players with live concerts and virtual worlds

It’s a platform where you can play millions of different... experiences... specifically created for the platform. A vast majority of those experiences are games, but you can also do things like attend concerts or visit Stranger Things’ Starcourt Mall re-created in Roblox. Roblox has a huge range of virtual worlds that you can go to and games to play that can take place in any kind of environment that a developer can imagine.

And while more than 50 percent of Roblox players are under the age of 12, it’s not just kids playing it; 30 percent of players are older than 17.

You could set up a private party in Roblox’s dedicated space, which can almost feel like a virtual rave. But I’d expect that more Roblox birthday parties look like a bunch of friends opening up the app, partying up, and just jumping from game to game and world to world right from the launcher. In the span of an hour, you can hop through all kinds of different experiences because the app loads everything really quickly, which means it’s pretty easy to replicate the chaotic energy of a real kids’ birthday party.

Lil Nas X threw a concert, towering over crowds of tiny dancing Roblox avatars and teleporting them to new virtual stages for each song. The concerts were a smash hit, garnering 33 million views across two days and four shows.
