The Worship of Maa Siddhidatri
The ninth day of Navratri is dedicated to the worship of Maa Siddhidatri. The word #Siddhi means #supernatural power and Dhatri means the awarder. Hence, it is believed that Maa Siddhidatri fulfils all divine aspirations.
Maa Siddhidatri is known to be the giver of perfection. She blesses her devotees with wisdom and grants them #spiritual knowledge. Maa Siddhidatri is also worshipped by demons and is surrounded by all Gods.
History and Origin
The #story of Maa Siddhidatri begins at a time when our #universe was nothing more than a deep #void. It was filled with darkness and there was no sign of life. This is when Goddess Kushmanda created the universe with the radiance of her smile.
Maa Kushamnda then went on to create the #Trimurti of Lord #Bramha – the energy of creation, Lord #Vishnu – the energy of sustenance and Lord #Shiva – the energy of destruction. Once they were created, Lord Shiva asked Maa Kushmanda to bestow him with perfection.
So, Maa Kushmanda created another goddess who bestowed Lord Shiva with 18 kinds of perfection. These included the Ashta Siddhi (8 primary forms of perfection) along with 10 secondary forms of perfection, described by Lord Krishna.
This goddess who had the ability to bestow these perfections on Lord Shiva is Maa Siddhidatri – the giver of perfection. Now, Lord Bramha was asked to create the rest of the Universe. However, since he required a man and a woman for creation, Lord Bramha found this task to be very challenging.
He prayed to Maa Siddhidatri and asked her to help him. Upon hearing Lord Bramha’s request, Maa Siddhidatri converted half of Lord Shiva’s body into a woman’s body. Therefore, Lord Shiva is also known as #Ardhanarishwar (Ardh - half, Nari - woman, Ishwar - refers to Lord Shiva).
Lord Bramha was now able to create living beings along with the rest of the Universe. So, it was Maa Siddhidatri who helped Lord Bramha with the creation of the Universe and also bestowed perfection upon Lord Shiva.
Worship of Maa Siddhidatri
Maa Siddhidatri is depicted as being seated on a lotus or a lion. She has four arms and holds a conch shell, a mace, a lotus and a discus in each of these hands.
Worshipped on the ninth day of Navratri, Maa Siddhidatri possesses the Ashta Siddhi. It is believed that Maa Siddhidatri blesses her devotees with spiritual wisdom and she is also known to destroy ignorance.

About Shatabhisha Nakshatra
Known as “the Star of Cosmic Order”, Shatabhisha holds 24th position in the series of 27 Nakshatras. It is an outstanding constellation consisting of a faint group of stars. All these stars lie in the heart of the Aquarius constellation. In the sky, this asterism can be seen by its neighboring bright star, Alpha-Aquarii (Sadalmelik).
Shatabhisha is also spelled as #Shatabhishak. Etymologically, the word Shatabhishak means “a hundred #healers'' or “the hundred medicines'' or “the hundred physicians. Du 20 au 25 août 1991, la vigoureuse scène #alternative du rock indépendant américain se réunissait dans l’État de Washington, autour d’une éthique et d’une poignée d’accords communs, lors de l’International Pop Underground Convention. Un absent remarqué allait quelques jours plus tard renverser leur monde : Nirvana.
Il y a trente ans, le 24 septembre 1991, la planète découvrait Nirvana. Les faux airs de clowns tristes sous leurs tignasses crades des trois musiciens, et les douze compositions de Nevermind, plus sophistiquées dans leur sauvagerie et habilement produites que tout ce que la scène rock indépendante avait créé jusque-là. Un avènement pour Kurt Cobain et ses deux comparses qui sonnait le glas d'une ère arrivée à son paroxysme à peine un mois plus tôt, lors d'un micro-Woodstock de la nation alternative des années 1980 tenu dans l'Etat de Washington. Une semaine de célébrations sans prétention qui marquait l'aboutissement d'une décennie de production musicale autonome, anti-consumériste, et d'un maillage de la scène musicale underground américaine, de New York à Seattle, de D.C. à la Californie, grâce aux labels #SST, Dischord, #Epitaph, K ou Sub Pop. La grande fête de l'école des punks, des nerds et des féministes de tout poil, la fabuleuse parade des losers, des asociaux et des parias. Ils ne le savaient alors pas encore, mais le « cool » et le système s'apprêtaient à les embrasser de gré ou de force.
La petite ville universitaire d'Olympia, 35 000 habitants, à cent bornes au sud-ouest de Seattle, a donc accueilli, du 20 au 25 août 1991, l'International Pop Underground Convention. Nirvana est absent, et pourtant l'ombre du groupe plane au dessus des salles de concert, notamment le luxueux #CapitolTheater, bâtiment de style Beaux-Arts qui trône dans le centre-ville depuis 1924. « La sortie imminente de Nevermind fut le sujet de discussion principal durant toute la convention », raconte Ira Collins, envoyé spécial de Rolling Stone pour couvrir l'événement. Le premier disque du trio, Bleach, sorti sur #SubPop en 1989, avait fait l'unanimité dans le milieu. La signature de Nirvana sur une major, à laquelle s'ajoutait l'arrivée du batteur Dave Grohl – transfuge des respectés Scream –, avait fait de Nevermind, dans le milieu, l'album le plus attendu de l'année. Mais Cobain, Novoselic et Grohl sont déjà loin, en Europe, en tournée avec #SonicYouth où ils y présentent en live les premiers extraits de l'album à venir, à des lieues d'imaginer que le bébé nageur de sa pochette deviendrait un jour la vedette des T-shirts des marchés aux puces du monde entier. « Pas trop dégoûté de ne pas être à la convention ? », avait demandé #ThurstonMoore à #KurtCobain. « Carrément ! »
“Un système culturel autosuffisant”
L'International Pop Underground Convention est organisée par #CalvinJohnson et #CandicePedersen, propriétaires de #KRecords, futur maison de Beck, Modest Mouse ou Built To Spill. Le label indépendant se fait le promoteur d'une scène underground locale expérimentale qui prône l'amateurisme et le minimalisme pop là où celle de Washington, D.C., son pendant sur la côte Est, s'est concentrée tout au long des années 80 sur le #punk-hardcore revendicatif du label Dischord ( #MinorThreat, #Void, Rites Of Spring). L'objectif de l'événement est de rassembler en un même lieu tous les acteurs – groupes, labels et fans – d'un réseau « do-it-yourself » national entretenu par la distribution de disques, l'échange de fanzines et les coups de main donnés aux artistes en tournée.
« Ce qui les unissait, c'était d'avoir bâti à partir 1981 un système culturel autosuffisant et totalement indépendant », explique Michael Azerrad, auteur de plusieurs livres (1) sur #Nirvana et la scène #rock alternative américaine des années 1980 et 1990. Ils seront 900 à rejoindre Olympia en cette fin d'été, débarquant non seulement de tout le pays, mais aussi du monde entier.
Sur scène, un son aussi lourd que celui des Melvins côtoie la pop naïve de Beat Happening, avec, en commun, une racine : le #punk. La cinquantaine de groupes invités – parmi lesquels Fugazi, #L7, #NationOfUlysses, #Unwound et cinq non-Américains – sont payés par les organisateurs, ce qui n'était pas le cas dans les rassemblements similaires qui se déroulaient à la même époque à New York.
“Une colonie de vacances rock'n'roll”
L'affiche n'a pas été annoncée à l'avance. L'accès à chaque concert, qui rassemble entre quatre et vingt groupes, coûte quatre ou cinq dollars. Aucun spectacle n'a lieu dans des bars, ceux-ci étant interdits aux moins de 21 ans. Aucun service de sécurité n'est engagé. Aucune accréditation n'est délivrée aux journalistes, qui payent leur place comme les autres. « Ce fut un moment rare, qui n'avait rien à voir avec le business, rappelle le patriarche de la côte Est, #IanMacKaye, cofondateur du groupe #Fugazi et de #DischordRecords. Il ne s'agissait que de partager notre amour de la musique au sein de notre communauté. »
Veillée pour la paix, projection marathon de la saga La Planète des singes, soirées dansantes et barbecue gratuit géant ponctuent cette « colonie de vacances rock'n'roll », comme l'écrit #IraRobbins dans Rolling Stone. « C'était idyllique et euphorique mais relativement discret, se souvient-il aujourd'hui. Il ne faut pas l'imaginer comme un festival classique, mais une manifestation modeste étalée sur divers lieux de la ville. Mais c'était absolument magique. » Dans une atmosphère de franche camaraderie, les #Melvins donneront un concert gratuit dans un parc. Dans la foule, on apercevait les parents et grands-parents des musiciens, tous vêtus de T-shirts du groupe.
L'activisme politique et la créativité culturelle de la scène d' #Olympia, encouragés par les programmes alternatifs de sa très progressiste université, avaient aussi permis l'émergence d'un mouvement féministe, les #riotgrrrls, qui prendra son envol à l'occasion de la convention. La soirée d'ouverture, baptisée « Love rock revolution girl style now » sera même le concert le plus marquant des six jours. Une succession de groupes féminins dont #BikiniKill, #Bratmobile et Heavens To Betsy (première formation de #CorinTucker de #Sleater-Kinney) démontraient crânement que les femmes avaient leur place à tenir dans le circuit alternatif – mieux, que si on ne leur donnait pas, elles la prendraient elles-mêmes.
Des losers bientôt cools
« Personne ne pouvait imaginer qu'on vivait la fin d'une époque, observe #MichaelAzerrad. Mais dans les semaines qui ont suivi la convention, le succès prodigieux de Smells Like Teen Spirit a tout changé. Cette communauté underground s'est transformée en potentielle vache à lait, ce qui l'a bouleversée à jamais. » Les quatre power chords du single phare de Nirvana débarquent à la radio le 27 août 1991, deux jours seulement après la fin de l' #InternationalPopUndergroundConvention. Tout bascule, pour le meilleur – le mainstream s'intéresse enfin à cette scène florissante et un #rock non frelaté domine à nouveau les radios – comme pour le pire – l'étiquette #grunge devient un outil marketing commode pour vendre baskets qui clignotent et colorations pour cheveux sur MTV. Le mouvement Riot grrrl, les mains encore pleines de l'encre de ses foisonnants fanzines photocopiés, se retrouve à la une de revues pour adolescentes, vidé de sa substance par des médias qui le réduisent à un phénomène de mode. « Les conversations ont changé après 1991, finit par déplorer, laconique, l'incorruptible Ian MacKaye. Avant, les gens échangeaient des idées et de la musique. Après, ils ne parlaient plus que d'argent et de contrats. »
« Aucun laquais de l'ogre corporate ne sera admis. » Cet avertissement péremptoire figurait au bas des invitations à l'International Pop Underground Convention pour sa première édition. Il n'y en aura pas d'autre. Et pour cause : qui, trente ans plus tard, pourrait en passer les portes ?
