Using our Very Large Telescope, astronomers have discovered, for the first time ever, a binary star close to our galaxy's supermassive black hole. Binary stars are extremely common throughout the galaxy but not close to the black hole, which makes this new system really interesting!

Named D9, it looks like a single dot, but its speed wobbles periodically back and forth, revealing that this is in fact two stars orbiting each other as they move together around the black hole.

I highly recommend CR boxes (see https://cleanaircrew.org/box-fan-filters/), I made several and even the easy filter+fan are so good. Clean air circulation helps seeing, mirror longevity, and humans. Of course if you have actual scope filters don't forget those too 🙂

For comparison, the expensive PW1000 filter covers vs a super simple CR over at the Allan I Carswell Observatory #yorkuniversity #Astrodon #astronomy #observatory #cleanair #corsirosenthalbox #airquality

https://mastodon.online/@astro_jcm/113153268722619065 astro_jcm@mastodon.online - 1/ This pic I took a few years ago at ESO's Paranal Observatory in #Chile almost didn't look like this! I was about to go to sleep when I saw that the folks at the UT4 telescope were using the lasers, so I decided to snap a quick shot.

But when reviewing the image on my camera's screen I noticed something was off. I looked up and saw that some clouds had rolled in within seconds! Here you can see the lasers going through two cloud layers.

I was privileged to be part of the team that made & released the very first images of Fragment A impacting at ~20:15 UTC on 16 July, 30 years ago last night, as seen from Calar Alto in Spain.

The brightness of the impact plume was a huge surprise & the following week saw intense astronomical, media, & public engagement.

We know how water goes from proto-stellar clouds to young stars, and then from comets to planets, but the link between them was missing.

ALMA spotted gaseous water in the disc around the star V883 Ori. Turns out that the composition of this water is very similar to that of comets in our Solar System!
