Emmanuel #Macron:

▪️Our ambassador in Niamey will remain despite the pressures of the coup leaders.

▪️We will continue with our firm policy regarding #Niger, which consists of not recognizing the coup plotters and supporting #Bazoum.

▪️If #ECOWAS leaves Bazoum, the leaders of the group will be at risk.

▪️Our policy in Niger is clear and derives from the courage of President Bazoum and from our military principles and interests.

▪️Our presence in #Africa is not just about the terrorist threat and the military solution should not replace the political one.

▪️We must look for new partners in Africa.

▪️If we had not intervened militarily in Africa, Niger, $Mali and #BurkinaFaso would not exist today with their known borders

WSJ: A top army commander from one #Ecowas member state predicted it would take six months to ready any intervention to reverse #Niger’s coup.

The Ecowas standby force is one of five such regional forces across #Africa, but they exist more on paper than in reality until called upon to intervene.

The army commander described the West African standby force as “an empty shell” that member countries would have to fill with troops and equipment.

#Saudi media outlet Asharq News reports that a PMC #Wagner Group unit was "besieged" in #Mali near the #Niger border by an #Al_Qaeda-linked terrorist cell.

Al-Qaeda has clashed several times this year with Wagnerite mercenaries deployed in Mali, with Al-Qaeda even claiming at one point to have captured a mercenary (no photographic evidence was ever shown).

It is not known whether this was a patrol, since there is considerable #jihadist activity on the Mali-Niger border, or whether these forces were going to Niger to reinforce the junta in the face of a possible #ECOWAS military intervention.

Anadolu Agency: Algerian President Tebboune rejects any possible military intervention in #Niger

— "Algerian President Abdelmadjid #Tebboune has rejected any external military intervention in Niger, where a #military coup overthrew President Mohamed #Bazoum last week.

"A military intervention could ignite the whole #Sahel region and Algeria will not use force with its neighbors," Tabboune said in an interview with local media on Saturday.

“No solution is possible in Niger without the participation of Algeria, as it is concerned by what is happening in this neighboring country,” he said, adding: “Algeria is willing to help the Nigeriens restore the constitutional legitimacy.”"
