People loved the A.I.-generated version of #JohnnyCash singing a #TaylorSwift #song, which was posted online last year by a person in Texas named Dustin Ballard. But who owns it? Could Taylor Swift sue? Probably not, since it’s a cover. Does the Cash estate have an ownership claim? Not necessarily, since you can’t copyright a style or a voice. Dustin Ballard? He neither composed nor performed the song. No one? Does it belong to all the world?

Johnny Cash and NIN's "Hurt"

2002-03-17: Johnny Cash records a cover of the song "Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails. It was soon hailed as one of his finest performances.

2003-02-22: Johnny records the video for that cover at the "House of Cash" museum (then closed to the public) in Hendersonville, Tennessee where most of his memorabilia was housed. His wife June Cash is seen in the video.

2003-05-15: Johnny 's wife June dies.

2003-09-12: Johnny dies.

2007-04-10: "House of Cash" burns down with almost every lost in the fire.

Stars are born, travel from their birth place, grow, shine their light for the universe to see and eventually die. We are not greater than the stars. Accepting this fact allows one to understand how fleeting life truly is.
