The GPL Summarized

by me from a recent comment of mine.

OK. If you insist on copyright, I’ll use my legal privileges granted by copyright law to prevent the use of almost all of those privileges by me or anyone else. I’ll only insist that my work must be attributed to me, and that my work, even if mixed in with the work of others, must always be distributed under exactly the same terms that I distributed it.

Two of the privileges included in "almost all" are the exclusive privilege of creating and distributing verbatim copies of my work, and the exclusive privilege of creating and distributing derivative works derived from my work. Of course, "my work," if that work is software compiled from source code, refers primarily to the source code, but also to the compiled object code.

Z-Library: New Problems

My private URL for Z-Library no longer works. These were an innovation Z-Library started a year or two ago. You sent an email message to them, and they sent you back custom URLs just for you.

However, I found http://zlib24th6ptyb4ibzn3tj2cndqafs6rhm4ed4gruxztaaco35lka.b32.i2p/ This works just fine, and will be harder to block, but I2P doesn't make connections as easily as the Clearnet, and not even as easily as Onionland. Also, a lot of you don't run I2P.

For now, https://singlelogin.re/ is also working.

Publishers Secure Widespread Support in Landmark Copyright Battle With Internet Archive

https://torrentfreak.com/publishers-secure-widespread-support-in-landmark-copyright-battle-with-internet-archive-240324/

Major book publishers continue their legal crusade against Internet Archive's scan-and-lend library, hoping to shut it down for good. IA's appeal previously received support from authors and copyright scholars. The publishers, however, have some heavyweight backers too. New amicus briefs are signed by former U.S. politicians, former judges, and legal scholars. Industry groups such as the MPA and RIAA also rally behind the publishers.

Is A.I. the Death of I.P.?

Generative A.I. is the latest in a long line of innovations to put pressure on our already dysfunctional #copyright #system.

People loved the A.I.-generated version of #JohnnyCash singing a #TaylorSwift #song, which was posted online last year by a person in Texas named Dustin Ballard. But who owns it? Could Taylor Swift sue? Probably not, since it’s a cover. Does the Cash estate have an ownership claim? Not necessarily, since you can’t copyright a style or a voice. Dustin Ballard? He neither composed nor performed the song. No one? Does it belong to all the world?

#Microsoft offers legal #protection for #AI #copyright infringement challenges

Source: https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2023/09/microsoft-offers-legal-protection-for-ai-copyright-infringement-challenges/

Microsoft's #announcement comes as generative AI tools like #ChatGPT have raised concerns about reproducing copyrighted material without proper attribution. Microsoft has heavily invested in AI through products like #GitHub #Copilot and #Bing Chat that can generate original code, text, and images on demand. Its AI models have gained these capabilities by scraping publicly available data off of the #Internet without seeking express #permission from copyright holders.

Now we know what #PirateBay made wrong:

They were not a multi million startup with a global company as a sponsor. So what they did was #piracy. But if #ChatGPT copies the whole internet it's a business model.

#Pirate Sites #Worldwide Face Emerging, Perpetual #Threat of Domain Seizures

What we’re able to show today is that at least one #domain #registrar in the United States has suspended domain names under the instructions of the High #Court of #Delhi. The suspensions are part of a dynamic+ injunction issued in India last year, to protect the rights of several #Hollywood studios and #Netflix, ostensibly in #India.

Right call over US copyright law

It is always good to see the law being applied correctly, especially when it comes to copyright:

A federal judge in the United States has dismissed a lawsuit against Aritzia that accused the retailer of copying an artist's work with hot pink, squiggle-shaped sculptures that appeared in stores in early 2023.

In his decision, Judge Jeffrey White said Richard X. Zawitz was trying to protect the style at the core of his art, known as Tangle sculptures, instead of a single fixed product protected under copyright law.

"Tangle claims copyright protection over an amorphous idea, effectively asking the Court to pin jelly to the wall," the Northern District of California judge wrote in his decision last fall.

"Style, no matter how creative, is an idea, and is not protectable by copyright."

It’s (almost) Public Domain Day!

In 2019, for the first time in over two decades, a new crop of literary work entered the public domain: everything first published in the United States in 1923. (Don’t forget the secret public domain books, either.) In 2020, books by E.M. Forster, Edna Ferber, and Edith Wharton became available for remixing. 2021 brought us everything published in 1925, “the greatest year for books,” including, of course, The Great Gatsby (yes, a sequel was published immediately, with plenty more in the works). In 2022, notably, A.A. Milne’s Winnie-the-Pooh passed through the veil, leading, inevitably and unfortunately, to this. Last year, To the Lighthouse entered the public domain, though to date nothing murdery has been done with it (that we know of).

So what’s on the table this year? Though copyright laws differ from country to country, on January 1st, 2024, books that were published in 1928 will enter the public domain in the United States. Here’s a selection of the most interesting:

J.M. Barrie, Peter Pan; or, the Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up (the original play)

Bertolt Brecht, The Threepenny Opera

Edgar Rice Burroughs, Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle

Agatha Christie, The Mystery of the Blue Train

W.E.B. Du Bois, Dark Princess

Robert Frost, West-Running Brook

Wanda Gág, Millions of Cats (the oldest American picture book still in print!)

Radclyffe Hall, The Well of Loneliness

Aldous Huxley, Point Counter Point

Nella Larsen, Quicksand

D.H. Lawrence, Lady Chatterley’s Lover (the original, unexpurgated version)

A. Milne, The House at Pooh Corner (meaning we’re soon to get a Tigger-themed sequel to the aforementioned horror flick)

Erich Maria Remarque, All Quiet on the Western Front (but only in the original German)

Evelyn Waugh, Decline and Fall

Virginia Woolf, Orlando: A Biography

W.B. Yeats, The Tower

Also of note? The earliest version of Mickey Mouse, as he first appeared in Steamboat Willie, will enter the public domain in 2024. Gird yourselves.

#Quad9 Turns the #Sony Case Around in #Dresden | Quad9

Today marks a bright moment in the efforts to keep the internet a neutral and trusted resource for everyone.

Quad9 has received word from the courts in Dresden, #Germany in the #appeal of our case versus Sony Entertainment (Germany). The court has ruled in favor of Quad9, clearly and unequivocally. The text from the court is available here in German and in English.

Needless to say, we are elated at the news.

Background

Sony Entertainment (Germany) started a legal proceeding against Quad9 more than two years ago to force Quad9 to stop resolving certain domain names which they claimed were involved in #copyright #infringement behavior.
